    America 1956 vs. America 2016

In 1956, John Wayne, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe were some of the biggest stars in the entertainment world.

In 2016, our young people look up to “stars” like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

In 1956, Americans were watching I Love Lucy and The Ed Sullivan Show on television.

In 2016, the major television networks are offering us trashy shows such as Mistresses and Lucifer.

Is that a problem per se? In 1956 it was still a huge financial and sociological problem to be single parent. Today there are solutions for either.

They're hardly commies, are they now? Maybe they just understand the concept of the golden mean better than thou.

    Ain't nobody laughing around here.

Supply and demand is a bitch, innit?

Stop whining about the world not standing still. Damn thing spins, dance along with it, sapiens. Ain't none of us having a choice in the matter.

Henry Drummond: All motion is relative, Matt. Maybe it's you who've moved away by standing still.

All those social and cultural issues are not why the American dream is dying. Corporate America, their lobbyists and politicians are the cause.

As to a lot of the assertions in the OP, they are boatload of crap.

I don't know that young people "look Up to" Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. I think they just enjoy some of their music. And what's wrong with lady Gaga? I happen to think there are some excellent TV shows and what's wrong with Lucifer? I don't know what the price of stamps has to do with anything. Were they supposed to remain 3 cents in perpetuity? Violence in schools has dropped dramatically from the 1990s. The reason for the metal detectors anymore is all the "responsible" gun owners shooting schools up. While it would be better if kids got out and played more, the US does not have the highest child obesity rate in the world. Part of the reason kids don't get out and play is that parents have the misconception that the crime rate is so high. It's not. People aren't afraid to leave their homes for fear of accidents. The author pulled that one out of his ass. Personally, i wouldn't want to ride in a car without seat belts. They've saved millions of lives. I never lock my car or my house. Guns sales are at a record high because you've been told by the NRA and their clients, the gun manufacturers, how high the crime rate is, when it's down considerably. While more babies may be being born to single parents, the teen birth rate is down considerably from the 50s-60s. Detroit is sad, but it's more changes in automation than anything else that caused the decline. Most "constitutionalists" have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. The world is $40 trillion dollars in debt. Who do we owe it to? Jupiter? LMAO

As an American I felt it my duty to set the record straight so you, as a Brit, don't have the wrong impression.

You have got to admit Miley Cyrus/Justin Bieber their songs and their voices are terrible. Music is not getting better it seems to be getting worse.

The top marginal rate was 91%, Marilyn and friends were doing plenty of fucking, it just wasn't on I-phone camera. Plenty of porn around back then, remember those 8 page "bibles", those 8mm films, those Danish porrn magazines? no? Well you were probably a punk back then, or maybe unborn. Thousands of women died every year from failed back alley abortions and there were plenty of gay bars and hangout for all the closeted gay folks to attend(the good old days, closeted gays and back alley abortions) The greatest cure of the century, the Salk Vaccine, was freely given to the world, unlike todays greedy fucking bastards that would have milked the public for billions to save their children from the scourge of polio, ever know any kids with polio? No? I grew up with a generation of them...

I grew up in the South in the 1950's, want to talk about Jim Crow? Segregation? Didn't think so. Good jobs were union jobs in those days, they were not demonized and spat on by their fellow workers, because the Republican Hate Machine did not exist, instead we had Ike, the last decent Republican President(well, Ford, but he got booted out by the haters)

I would be more than happy to share my 1950's experiences with you, but you really don't give a fuck, you are looking for some kind of political fodder to use against evil Liberals, right?

In 1956, you could buy a first-class stamp for just 3 cents.

In 2016, a first-class stamp will cost you 49 cents.

In 1956, gum chewing and talking in class were some of the major disciplinary problems in our schools.

In 2016, many of our public schools have been equipped with metal detectors because violence has gotten so far out of control.

In 1956, children went outside and played when they got home from school.

In 2016, our parks and our playgrounds are virtually empty and we have the highest childhood obesity rate on the entire planet.

In 1956, if a kid skinned his knee he was patched up and sent back outside to play.

In 2016, if a kid skins his knee he is likely to be shipped off to the emergency room.

In 1956, “introducing solids” to a baby’s diet may have meant shoving a piece of pizza down her throat.

In 2016, we have “attachment parenting” which advocates treating children like babies almost until they reach puberty.

In 1956, seat belts and bicycle helmets were considered to be optional pieces of equipment, and car safety seats were virtually unknown.

In 2016, millions of us are afraid to leave our homes for fear that something might happen to us, and if something does happen we slap lawsuits on one another at the drop of a hat.

In 1956, many Americans regularly left their cars and the front doors of their homes unlocked.

In 2016, many Americans live with steel bars on their windows and gun sales are at all-time record highs.

In 1956, about 5 percent of all babies in America were born to unmarried parents.

In 2016, more than 40 percent of all babies in America will be born to unmarried parents.

In 1956, one income could support an entire middle class family.

In 2016, approximately one-third of all Americans don’t make enough money to even cover the basics even though both parents have entered the workforce in most households.

In 1956, redistribution of wealth was considered to be something that “the communists” did.

In 2016, the federal government systematically redistributes our wealth, and two communists are fighting for the Democratic nomination.

In 2016, there are only about 688,000 people living in Detroit and it has become a joke to the rest of the world.

In 1956, millions of Americans dreamed of moving out to sunny California.

In 2016, millions of Americans are moving out of California and never plan to go back.

In 1956, television networks would not even show husbands and wives in bed together.

In 2016, there is so much demand for pornography that there are more than 4 million adult websites on the Internet, and they get more traffic than Netflix, Amazon and Twitter combined.

In 1956, the American people had a great love for the U.S. Constitution.

In 2016, “constitutionalists” are considered to be potential terrorists by the U.S. government.

In 1956, people from all over the world wanted to come to the United States to pursue “the American Dream”.

In 2016, 48 percent of all U.S. adults under the age of 30 believe that “the American Dream is dead”.

In 1956, the United States loaned more money to the rest of the world than anybody else.

In 2016, the United States owes more money to the rest of the world than anybody else.

    America 1956 vs. America 2016
1956, black people were treated as subhumans, discriminated against, beaten, lynched.. 2016 a black man is president
1956 women were to stay at home and take care of the house, if they did work, they were sexually harassed 2016 sexual harrassment laws, women running companies, and a woman is the front runner to be president of the US
1956 gay people hid in the closet for fear of being beaten, 2016 they can be open about it and can get married.

The list of comparisons can go on and on. Why do people pretend life was a fantasy in the 50s, there was so much fucked up shit that went on, and just horrendous systematic abuse of anybody other than a white male christian

The predicted response from the left- the 1950's were bad because of racism... well yes but how about all of the good things? Racism is not the be all and end all in judging whether one time was better than another.

What is predicted is your typical no response, deflection we get from wrongies. You pick one thing from someones response and focus on that, probably because that's all you can muster is a line or two, and didn't even read everything else. ANd as usual, you can't even make a valid argument even to that other than "typical liberals"

mentioned a hell of a lot more than just racism. People still raped, murdered, stole, in the 1950s, and a hell of a lot more people got away with it, and worse, innocent people were being convicted without any real evidence

And if you want to talk about why 1950s were good for economic growth in this country, that would tear down the stupid right wing talking point that tax cuts for the rich create jobs, tax rates were high, manufacturing jobs were at home, etc

So, which banned troll retread are you?

Is anyone denying that crimes were still committed in the 50's. Nobody is saying the 50's were a dream age for some it certainly was not but the facts speak for themselves America is less healthy, less wealthy and less happy than it was 60 years ago.
