Win or lose in 7 weeks? Conservatism and the GOP lose.

It's simply a matter of "short term damage" versus "long term damage."

I know I'll probably get a "Haha! Already expecting Trump to win, huh, Gordon?" claims of whistling past the graveyard from the PH Right.....but it's a simple analysis.

If Trump loses? The GOP will immediately try to blame him and "Trumpism" for the loss...quite fairly. The Party will then scramble to change their image....drop all the anti-immigrant rants...and shut down those who do them....and try to appeal to Latino voters by saying "Trump was never a Republican....we're not that Party you saw."

The damage will be short-term. Still will hurt the GOP in 2018 and 2020....but recoverable by 2022 and 2024.

If Trump wins? His disasterous Presidency...and the "locked-in" image of the GOP as a Party that panders to racism....AND is no longer conservative (Trump's pandering on paid maternity leave, gender pay inequality, no "reforming" Social Security & Medicare, tariffs, his social liberalism on abortion and gay marriage, ec.)....

will DEVASTATE the Republican Party. It'll be the worst of both worlds.....a GOP that stands for nothing, except hating immigrants and Muslims and having a rodeo clown as their Party Leader.......and which has abandoned its Reagan conservatism and become...as the Far Right always accused it of being...."Democrat-Lite" on other issues, particularly fiscal.

    It would be GENERATIONAL damage.

This is why many of us support Trump.....either way we win. People like John McCain are done.

SC, what exactly will happen to the GOP if Trump wins? You keep saying "it will be destroyed"....give me specifics. What REPLACES it? What will the agenda be? What will it be called?

What happens to the Republicans who LIKED the "old Republican Party"? Do they just knuckle under and support this new Party?

Speak at length.....I won't stop you.

Trump is the culmination of the 8 year growth of far-right populism. The Republican Party will suffer regardless of the outcome.

If Trump wins, we get a four year hangover, that we hopefully recover enough from by 2020 to salvage what's left of American government.

I don't think so. If Trump wins, he WILL get the ENORMOUS tax cuts for billionaires that he wants, simply because the GOP Congress ALSO wants those. That will be the FINAL DEATH KNELL for the beleaguered middle class of America. We WON'T recover from that. NOR would we recover from four more years of doing NOTHING about global warming. We are RUNNING OUT OF TIME on that issue. We will also lose almost ALL of our allies if Trump brings back torture as an instrument of U.S. government policy. ANYONE who doubts this should be REQUIRED to read the article on torture in the latest issue of Foreign Affairs.

Frankly, I don't the American Republic would or COULD survive four years of President Trump.

And targeted at America's ultra-rich like a laser beam, same as George W. Bush's tax cuts were.

I'm not sure which is worse - if Trump wins or loses. Either way his followers will go berserk. They'll make the Black Lives Matter protesters look like a bunch of Buddhist monks. Fortunately, most of Trump's followers are middle aged white guys so they'll get winded pretty quickly.
