Russian propaganda effort helped spread ‘fake news’ during election, experts say

By Craig Timberg November 24 at 8:27 PM

The flood of “fake news” this election season got support from a sophisticated Russian propaganda campaign that created and spread misleading articles online with the goal of punishing Democrat Hillary Clinton, helping Republican Donald Trump and undermining faith in American democracy, say independent researchers who tracked the operation.

Russia’s increasingly sophisticated propaganda machinery — including thousands of botnets, teams of paid human “trolls,” and networks of websites and social-media accounts — echoed and amplified right-wing sites across the Internet as they portrayed Clinton as a criminal hiding potentially fatal health problems and preparing to hand control of the nation to a shadowy cabal of global financiers. The effort also sought to heighten the appearance of international tensions and promote fear of looming hostilities with nuclear-armed Russia.

Two teams of independent researchers found that the Russians exploited American-made technology platforms to attack U.S. democracy at a particularly vulnerable moment, as an insurgent candidate harnessed a wide range of grievances to claim the White House. The sophistication of the Russian tactics may complicate efforts by Facebook and Google to crack down on “fake news,” as they have vowed to do after widespread complaints about the problem.

On Facebook, PropOrNot estimates that stories planted or promoted by the disinformation campaign were viewed more than 213 million times.

Some players in this online echo chamber were knowingly part of the propaganda campaign, the researchers concluded, while others were “useful idiots” — a term born of the Cold War to describe people or institutions that unknowingly assisted Soviet Union propaganda efforts.
Not that the useful “useful idiots” would recognize their role.

Perhaps the trouble makers at anti-trump protests are paid agitators, or dupes, what do you think?

Well it wouldn't surprise me they are going to push for a candidate they prefer but I would disagree it interfered with our democracy. I believe we do the same thing in other nations, don't know for sure but if we weren't it would be foolish. So Russia made a bunch of Facebook posts and tweets. I imagine they as well as us, and most nations, have entire PR departments dedicated to this. But lets be honest, Trump didn't win because of Russia, he won because of Hillary.

If we had a democracy, Hillary would be the president elect.

I thought it was the FBI's fault.

Now, it's back to blaming Russia?

Anything but Hillary's fault, Oh No, can't be her fault, nope, HAS TO be blamed on someone/something else.

I wish they would make up their minds...

And what about "we the people" that formed the union?

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union…

How long do you think the majority of citizens will be content to be marginalized in favor of a political construct?

California has over 38 million people. Wyoming has less than a million.

    See the problem here?

OK, this media creation of everything not on "msm" being "fake news" is ultimately just projection because the msm has been caught so frequently and so often in spreading lies that now... the msm as a whole has a trust rate that varies between 6-12% depending on outlets.

So, they are trying to keep their failing status from falling even lower by claiming everything else is fake.

I had hoped a trump win would signify a return to sanity... but instead it's meant an expansion on the insanity.
