Correct. When the religious right moved to the Republican Party is when it went hard right and starting purging its liberal and moderate Republicans. 1980 was the key year.

And abortion was a huge lever.

(And cynicism, since most of them wouldn't hesitate to head in for an abortion if their family needed one.)

And another way of looking at it, is that the democratic party got rid of the racist "Dixiecrats."

It's hard to claim any moral compass with them in your party.

    Thx

IKE could have run on either ticket he was so popular. He also gave us the Highway system we Istill use today.

Did not make him a lefty in any way, shape or form. He chose Nixon as his VP.

I guess to understand that I'll have to know what you mean by "a lefty" in this post.

The Republicans made them an offer they couldn't refuse, they endorsed their bigotry and racism, hence the loss of the GOP's liberals and moderates, there were more Dixiecrats than moderate Republicans so they figured it was a good swap.

Well, why do righties resist doing what's right for the country as a whole instead of this, "I've got mine, fuck you" philosophy that they espouse and practice?

Maybe IKE, but I did not vote back then. Both parties wanted him to run. Winning a war does that.
Plus the guy actually had two bits of brain to rub together. His warning about the MIC is classic.
