Polk County Sheriff's Department: "If you have parking tickets, please drown,"

So, this is what passes for "Protect and Serve" in Polk County?!?!

Florida Sheriff's Office: Anyone With a Warrant Will Be Arrested at Hurricane Shelters

As Florida braced for one of the largest hurricanes in recorded history, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office released a warning to residents: If you have an outstanding warrant, you will not be allowed to enter a shelter.

    Here are the actual tweets:
Polk County Sheriff Retweeted Polk County Sheriff
If you go to a shelter for #Irma and you have a warrant, we'll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail
    Polk County Sheriff added,
    *@PolkCoSheriff
If you go to a shelter for #Irma, be advised: sworn LEOs will be at every shelter, checking IDs. Sex offenders/predators will not be allowed

In an official statement, the Sheriff's Department spokesperson had this to say:
“Officers are legally obligated to take a person into custody if they have a warrant,” Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Horstman told the Orlando Sentinel. She also pointed out that officers do not have any way of immediately seeing the type of crime the warrant is connected with, which means anyone with a minor offense—like an unpaid parking ticket—will be arrested if they try to seek refuge at a Hurricane Irma shelter.

So, not only has the Polk County Sheriff's department decided that, even though they may haven served their sentence, sex offenders don't deserve shelter fro a hurricane. Now, keep in mind that, in Florida, a "sexual offender" can include that 19, or 20 year old kid who had consentual sex with his 16-year-old girlfriend, with her parents' knowledge, and sanction. So, please refrain from the knee-jerk reaction of "but what about the childreeeeeeennnn!!!!".

Furthermore, they have apparently decided that, if you have too many traffic tickets, wellll...fuck you. Either your family will have to suffer through the hurricane without you, adding to the stress, and fear, or you'll just have to ride out the storm in your flooded, wind-torn house.

Apparently, Polk residents find this offensive, too:

Insanely badass to endanger the citizens you serve. I hope your tweet goes really viral and you get whatever benefit you were hoping for!

This is monstrous. You are going to kill people and their families over unpaid parking tickets.

What the hell is wrong with you? Threatening people so they hide during an emergency? Forcing LEOs to risk their lives rescuing?

This could be the most irresponsible tweet I've ever seen from a public official, including my own, which is saying something.

Yea, probably not cool to announce this.

    Just do it.

Don't make a big stink about it. Don't talk about it. Don't waste time going for small timers.

But, if they can get their hands on a SERIOUS criminal, then, by all means, they should pick him or her up, when the availability arises.

(Not so certain that Hurricane conditions are best for apprehending and transporting criminals, though.....)

Except, in the process, they get the single mom of three who happens to have a parking ticket. You have to agree that's kinda fucked up...

The time has passed, and the place was the courthouse/city hall.

They should have taken care of business, but it is no surprise you don't think people should be held accountable for their actions.

he needs to start with his own department:

Polk County Sheriff's Office deputy arrested after altercation with girlfriend - News - The Ledger - Lakeland, FL

    and

Former Polk jail detention clerk arrested on charges involving sex with inmate - News - The Ledger - Lakeland, FL

Like I said...only the SERIOUS criminals.

IF this Single Mom, is wanted for murder, or something major, snatch her. IF, she's just missed a few court apperances for check fraud, or something, worry about her later......

WTF are they going to do with someone who owes a freaking parking ticket, anyways?????

Waste of time and effort, right now. TOTAL waste!

Yea, one would think that those two situations are just a wee bit more serious, than unpaid parking tickets........
