Is Trump using the Madman theory?

Interesting perspective. Seems some think he may be acting crazy and unstable on purpose. He has been with Kissinger a lot these days...

It's going to be the political question of this era: Is President Donald Trump crazy like a fox? Or is it something else?

There's no precedent for the mercurial Trump, but there is what Richard Nixon called the "madman theory," according to his chief of staff, H.R. Haldeman, and it's pretty simple: Nixon consciously tried to portray himself as unstable to give himself a hand-up over US adversaries in the Cold War. Nixon's aides, including Haldeman and national security adviser Henry Kissinger were complicit in the gamesmanship, according to Haldeman's writings and recordings of Nixon and Kissinger. They knew he wasn't rushing to set off a nuclear weapon. But the Russians, as the theory goes, couldn't be so sure. After all, Nixon was a "madman."

    Or was he?

Trump's lack of predictability extends further than any notable predecessor, and there is no clear rhyme and reason to his behavior -- much less a coherent strategy. There's little evidence to suggest he's doing more than taking issues as they come each day, hopping from lily pad to lily pad and doing his best to make it look like he plotted his jumps. Trump, in the way Nixon wanted the Russians to think he might hit the button first, wants people to think he'll insist on building a wall and maybe even shut down the government, even though it's unclear he wants to or will be able to do either. Trump thrives on surprise. Nobody -- not even the President -- seems to know what he's going to do or tweet about next, which is part of the reason he's made politics such an incredible, shocking jarring thing to watch for the past two years -- like it or not.

Nixon was a creepy paranoid fuck...but at least he knew how to act as president.

Trump has zero legislative experience. His quirks and failures are only compounded and complicated by his and his staffs lack of presidential history and decorum.

You pose this question as if Trump had any choice but to be a madman. He's always been a madman, and it's never been a secret.

I don't think he's employing any kind of strategy. I think he's naturally impulsive, erratic, irrational, juvenile and narcissistic. It's who he is.

Who cares what he is as long as he gets results.

Judge him at the half-way mark and see how he's doing.

    That's your choice.

Not really going to tell you how successful he's been however but if it makes you feel better than hey, go for it.

That would be ok if he were getting results. He is not. His is not only a failure as a president...he is a failure in his presidency.

Now you want to wait till the half-way point of his failed presidency to be sure...ok.

He's not even a year in yet, jeez.

Obama had a supermajority and he hadn't passed Obamacare by this point yet either.

Did you call him a failure also?

Not even a year and his failures keep racking up. Its telling that all of Trump's failures go un-noticed to you. All you focus on his legislation.

The Presidency is more than passing legislation, which Trump has failed to pass any substantive legislation...but it is also his administration.

How many staffers and cabinet members has Trump had to fire for misconduct. That is directly reflected on him as President.

His white house is a mess. ...but keep hope alive.
