Why Is Trump Destroying the State Department?

I've been hearing for a while now that the State Department is losing personnel and I've wondered why. In the comments is this post and it seems it could be the likely reason.

The Soviet Union/KGB considered its down fall due to our State Departments work around the world. It is also the State Department that monitors sanctions such as those on Russia and their Oligarchs...
Trump as with the Repub plank on Ukraine is just doing what Putin wants...
The Dossier is proving to be mostly correct.
And a dash of this mixed in.

I suspect a lot of the problem is the same old same old with Trump: he honestly has no idea of the importance of the State Department, and in general thinks anything to do with furriners is suspect in any event. He's grossly ignorant on all areas of public policy and government, including America's relations with other countries.
My guess is he has absolutely no clue there's even a problem. As long as the White House chef cooks Trump's french fries just so and he likes the color of the drapes and enough people show up at his red state rallies, he's good to go.

Ambassadors are a worthless position in the state department.

They are glorified guys who hand out paychecks and go to dinner parties.

They accomplish absolutely nothing of any value.

    Time for another Mencken quote:

“Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance. No one in this world, so far as I know—and I have researched the records for years, and employed agents to help me—has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.”
― H.L. Mencken, Notes on Democracy

    Let's do one more:

“The demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots.”
    ― H.L. Mencken

You've said some ignorant things, Spooky, but this takes the cake. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. You're as ignorant as the idiot in the WH. But even if you were right, which you're not, the reason for Trump gutting the State Department is even worse than the fact that he's doing it. And it is further proof that Trump is working for the best interests of Russia and not the US.

Instead of simply calling me ignorant why don't you show me how I'm being ignorant.

You can troll just fine, its the part about coming up with a counter-argument you fail at.

Tell me why ambassadors are so important.

    (can't wait to hear this)

More than a dash of this:

He's too ignorant ... and stupid ... to be a mastermind. He and his peeps wanted to buddy up with Putin, but it was mostly their fantasies. Putin will use them as he can but I really don't see Trump not putting ambassadors in Lichtenstein because he thinks that will please Putin. He just doesn't know. He thinks he'll get some credit for suppressing the number of government "employees". Doesn't matter how vital any of the positions are.

Plus, he's too busy playing golf, watching Fox and tweeting to pay much attention to the ambassadorial shortlists Tillerson's staff have prepared for him.

There is a lot more than goes on with the State Department than simply the ambassadors themselves.

In the words of this article, an inherent part of an ambassador's job is to attract as little attention as possible, so "their accomplishments (or failures) tend to go unnoticed." Here are some examples of what they can do, though, and those are things that did attract attention:

In February 2012, the Sino-American relationship was tested by the attempt of Chongqing Police Chief Wang Lijun to defect to the U.S. at the American consulate in Chengdu, where Wang had fled following a confrontation with his powerful boss, Bo Xilai. After police loyal to Bo had encircled the consulate, Ambassador Locke helped negotiate Wang's safe passage to Beijing, where he would later be tried and convicted for his role in the murder of Neil Heywood, a British national.
Later last year, after the dissident Chen Guangcheng escaped house arrest in Shandong province and fled to the American embassy in Beijing, Locke helped negotiate Chen's emigration to the U.S. and was even seen holding the blind activist's hand as the two entered a hospital. Though resolution of these crises required high-level involvement above the ambassador's station, Locke won praise for his work keeping the Sino-American relationship on even footing.

    Another one:

Following the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic he entered the diplomatic service and was first engaged at the embassy in USA and then in London, initially as a legation councillor, from 1925 to 1938 as ambassador. As a gesture of protest against the Munich Agreement he resigned from this post in 1938. After the War he was hailed from the very beginning as a prominent representative of the foreign resistance movement, for at home he was well-known and popular due to his commentaries broadcast by the BBC.
