    "Myside" Bias

I believe this explains the mental illness of 'joining,' following and indeed, the biggest mentally ill act of all, joining a political party.

I find most people having difficulty discussing this subject. They are readily defensive about their opinion often before it's even challenged. To tell them that they may be playing the game all wrong from the beginning, well they just feel like you are talking down to them - and that never goes over well when trying to appeal to the heart.

Which is severely lacking in political parties - heart.

The defense against these cognitive weaknesses is supposed to be "critical thinking". We're supposed to attack our own thought processes critically, do our best to assume they are flawed and look earnestly for our own flaws. This is supposed to free us from the unconscious processes described in the OP article, so we can actually gradually improve our understanding of things and become ENLIGHTENED.

If you let that slide, next thing you know you wake up in a jungle and some psycho is telling you to drink the kool-aid.

I find the lack of an ability to belong to anything often suppresses their brains to the point that they can't focus on issues and instead are easily swept into romantic views more akin to Fantasia-ism. In other words many are deep thinkers with an inability to think beyond their romantic limited view. At some point this nation has to commit to something that shows that in the struggle between people matter versus military matters, crowds have to stand up in unison or we end up with a Trump or a pedophile. At that point they turn away and say "Well I didn't vote for him" after they throw their votes away or worse, don't vote.

I think of myself as a Liberal. That is why I had no problem changing parties 30 years ago. And if the Democratic Party changed its stances to nutty shit like the GOP has done, I would bail on them in a heartbeat...

Clarifying: Social Liberal, Fiscal Conservative(not the batshit crazy of trickle down, the classic fiscal conservatism of Ike)
