I do think the discussions open minds to further, independent inquiries, usually focused on reinforcing one's own opinions.

But it's all good. More information from more sources are often useful.
I will go further and say ALMOST NEVER.

When one side more often than not is completely wrong and doesn't have facts, logic and reasoning on their side, yeah, there is arguing in circles, because they jsut keep repeating the same false things with nothing to back it up. This forum really has become very bad, with most people on the "right" being dumb trolls that do nothing but defelct and post stupid one liners, offer nothing of intelligence. And of course in the attempt to be "fair" and with limited right leaning people here, these dumb trolls become staff, so it just perpetuates the trolling problem

But in my case, political forums did cause a change in me. It started at another forum. There was a beleaguered Republican whom few accepted as a Republican because he supported unions. His name was Jake.

He is the one who brought my attention to how Republican policies were hollowing out the middle class and leading to more working poor who needed government help in spite of holding full-time jobs. The Walmart model, where exploitative companies raked in the profits while their rank and file employees filed for food stamps.

And he helped bring my attention to how, as Republican policies were helping to create more working poor, so-called fiscal conservatives were also trying to shrink the safety nets for these people whom they were helping to push into financial straits.

Jake was a major factor in how I got past my scorn for Occupy Wall Street and became open to the messages of Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

    interesting question.

Ive learned that people value their politics more then they value people. That goes for both sides. That was a bit of a shock to learn and changed my mind about trying.

I learned that real women are valued less then trans women. They lose to men once again. That was huge for me learning that, and in response i have changed my stance.

It is absurd to assert that any particular subset of people is "valued" above any other subset. Valued by whom?

Your statement presumes to reduce all humans to mere stereotypes. Personally, I value individuals, not based upon their race nor their gender, but based upon their behavior.

I do not think a day passes that I do not learn from another perspective or a fact I was not aware of.

For anyone to say their minds have not changed in any way seems to me to be an awfully closed mind that is incapable of accepting new facts.

Or to put it more bluntly, why the hell are we here day after day?

Well, some are not here for learning or for company. Some are clearly here because they get off on trolling.

But hopefully the majority of us are here for something more.

I come here for the humor and good times. Often that is in short supply so it makes sense to drift away when the trolling is thickest. It comes and goes too.

    Very well said, MaryAnne.

Anyone who does not get anything, at least occasionally, is on this site for the wrong reasons.

Some are embarrassed to admit that their mind has been changed by a good argument.
