Inside the Minds of Hardcore Trump Supporters

Given the meteoric rise of Donald Trump, and the ill-defined phenomenon known as Trumpism, it's vital that we understand the psychology that attracted Americans to the real estate mogul in the first place. Research suggests such voters are driven by a combination of racial resentment and authoritarianism.

Sociologist David Norman Smith cited both in a just-published paper, in which he argues hardcore Trump supporters "target minorities and women" and "favor domineering and intolerant leaders who are uninhibited about their biases."
The study suggests the bulk of his supporters, at least in the Republican primaries, were not old-fashioned conservatives who preach obedience and respect for authority. Rather, they were people who take a belligerent, combative approach toward people they find threatening.

I suspect it’s a combination of things. There is economic anxiety in these areas, which are linked to fears of immigrants — of “losing their country.” They don’t recognize their country anymore. There are more and more immigrants, more and more people of color, and it’s making people feel uncomfortable. So it’s economic anxiety mixed with racism and xenophobia.

The country is really divided along racial lines, which is really sad. Maybe America is not ready for a woman president. Maybe eight years of a black president, followed by the prospect of a woman president, was too much, too fast, for America. But we need to really dig down into the exit poll data to find out what America was telling us.

    Racism, Xenophobia, and Trump’s Win

try to breathe while you're reading these articles. How will history record the emergence of Trump's presidency? Right now, it's being told by a media that's not up to the task. Who would rather pit one political ideology against the other because that's what brings in the viewers. So no, they won't dig down in to the exit polling to see what American voters are trying to say. Mainly, because they were complicit in the political trends we're now paying the price for each and every day. It's no wonder that our younger generations is being looked to pull us out of the political mess their parents created. While journalist, one and all, comment on how "articulate" they are. As if they're surprised to find out they're not buying into the same nonsense adults do. "Inside the minds of the hardcore Trump supporter"? Nope. This is who we are as a nation. If anything, these so-called "hardcore Trump supporters" are just being more honest about how they really feel.

One major flaw in the study is the presumption that tRump supporters have a brain.

    What's a hardcore Trump supporter?

Someone who maybe donated $1000 or more towards the MAGA campaign?

If you donated less $1000 does that make one a "softcore" Trump supporter?

If you didn't donate at all I guess that would make one a "G" rated Trump supporter.

If you believed he wasn't a conman and voted for him, you are a Trumpster. I'm sorry I still don't see how any rationale human being can't tell this guy is nothing more than a snake oil salesman.

    Well ....

Maybe when taxes are cut, the GDP is up, and unemployment is down, just to name a couple of things, the American people may like what you call "a snake oil salesman".
