What I do know is we have at least one, maybe two, Supreme Court Justices who don't seem to think it's helpful terminology. And it's considered a slur among most immigrant rights organizations.
The Supreme Court uses formal language and legal jargon, but conversational language. But even the Supreme Court's opinion referenced earlier uses the term "illegal alien," and not as any kind of slur.

it's my understand it was only used in reference to other cases.

Your understanding is incorrect. Take a look at the Court's opinion. It is sometimes used in quoting other cases, sometimes in referring to statutes that do not themselves use the term, and one is a reference to a document produced by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Counsel that uses the term in its title.

no. If you're going to argue that it's used in a certain way then please quoted the relevant passages. This is from the article in the OP.
Last month's Supreme Court decision in the landmark Arizona immigration case was groundbreaking for what it omitted: the words "illegal immigrants" and "illegal aliens," except when quoting other sources. The court's nonjudgmental language established a humanistic approach to our current restructuring of immigration policy.
I read the opinion as best I could. But, didn't find what you're referring to. I see other sources being quoted. Can you tell what pages you're referring to exactly?

Can you provide an example where "illegal" has been used on this site as a slur? If I have ever used the term "illegal" rest assured, it was because I was talking about illegals and not using it as a way to smear immigrants. You are race-bating once again and looking to victimize people who have not been wronged.

    FAIL.

first, you're the first person to bring up race. Second, the term itself is considered a slur. Third, you don't appear to know very much about how controversial the term is. Here are a few examples:

Turness was describing NBC's integration with their Spanish-language network Telemundo, which included coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. and his interaction with a young girl who was afraid her parents would be deported because they’re “illegals.”

“I’m going to stop you right there. We use the term undocumented immigrants,” Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) interrupted.

Who cares what some liberal host or liberal congressman says? They are not going to stop people from using words in the English language just because they don't like it. It's called free speech. Might want to look it up and read about it sometime.
