Most of the semi autos like 45 and 9mm don't have a much velocity compared to to the 357 or 44 mag. Basically more powder to drive it farther with more energy.
muzzle-energy.jpg This chart shows the energy of a bullet, the more energy the more kill power. The last column is KE or Kenetic Energy. You also take into account the powder behind each bullet that gives it velocity. Of course the shotgun dosn't go very far. The higher the velocity the farther a bullet goes. Most high powered rifles have a bullet designed to a sharp point. Most handguns are rounded and designed for shooting at short distance. I killed a deer once with a 357 handgun at a hundred yards and that was not an instant kill, so it was about the maximum range.

My question here, is would the number of people injured and killed be about the same if the shooter had used a semi auto handgun instead of an AR 15?

    yes.

effective range of the 9mm: 1900 yards

aim would be hard, but this guy really didn't aim either.

but you are correct, you are no gun expert.

That's what's cool about forums. There is a lot of information and knowledge in the community.

That 9mm would have a lot of drop at that range. If you could hit your target at 1900 yards I would really be surprised. It would lose most of its energy at that distance

Well I hope you are open minded enough to learn. I'd be happy to teach you reality about guns, etc.

I know, I was thinking you'd have to aim at the moon to hit the ground that far away. lol but apparently it has enough energy to be lethal still at that distance.

I sure wouldn’t count on it. I used to see graphs with the arcs of bullits I will see if there is one for the 9mm

Shorter range is a pretty obvious drawback to handguns.
    Not that I can see.

If anyone has watched those videos of the Vegas shooting the rapid fire I was hearing sounded more like a belt fed fully automatic weapon.

    Bump stock my arse.

No one is shooting a 9mm, over 100 yards in a real situation. The gun is made for 30 yards an in. An AR-15 is made for about 200 yards an in, unless you have one from a place like Blacksword that specializes in AR-15's that can compete at 1,000 yards. This is a really nice and special gun.

As far as AR-15's go. They are a far cry from military rifles. They are a semi-automatic .223. That is a small round.

58 dead and over 800 injured in one mass shooting and the issue is the definition of gun expert? America is so great again.
