I'm thinking yes, but interested in your thoughts as well.
    Mr. Chief,

Wouldn't that be against the Constitution?

Seriously, there are three branches of government, not four.

Hearing you all loud and clear.

Maybe a reasonable compromise would be to require congress confirmation for firing as well as for hiring?

I'm not seeing how this wouldn't make them even MORE political.

It may be. But the Constitution can be amended if we find a better way to do things. There is no reason to think that 250 years ago they got everything exactly right that will perfectly fit this nation forever. What we are talking about in this thread is a perfect example... organizations like the FBI and CIA did not exist when the Constitution was written.

It would provide a limited shield from a single branch of the government.

We already have that shield. It's called an election every four years. And impeachment proceedings when warranted. I get that you're trying to make helpful suggestions. I'm simply explaining why I'm skeptical they'd achieve the ends you're seeking.

    Mr. Chief,

True, and the Congress could also amend the Constitution to require that unicorn farts be bottled. Both are about equally possible.

By they way, organizations like the Department of Energy, Department of Education, Department of Defense, the EPA, Department of the Interior, Department of State, Department of Health and Human Services, etc., etc. also did not exist when the Constitution was written and ratified.

Maybe they should have more independence. But, you better be careful with that and not grant them TOO MUCH of it, to the point that the secret agencies become a state within the state, above the law and unaccountable to anyone, and perhaps even holding control, eventually, over the government itself. That's Putin's Russia, essentially. You do not want that, believe me...
