    What good is NATO anyway?

I understand the purpose of NATO if you're from Poland, or Canada.

I don't have any problem with other countries being vassals of the US if they want.

But from the point of view of France, it just doesn't make sense.

Any problem with Russia can be resolved peacefully.

France was better off when it was out of NATO.

It only took the small-minded Sarkozy (beurk!) to put us back in.

That twat probably just wanted cover before his military coup against Gaddafi.

Europe tore itself to pieces for a thirty year period under the influence of extreme nationalistic policies while nations around the globe picked up the pieces in one form or another. The spirit of cooperation fostered by NATO and the EU has so far prevented such extremism from gaining ground again. To state that it is prudent to leave an organisation because 'times are good' is a little short sighted as that situation may change in the future. We are seeing a wave of public sentiment which would like to return to the isolationist policies of the early 20th cent. ( and it is not confined to Europe), and many (such as myself) view that with an element of suspicion. The spirit of mutual cooperation is always beneficial in the long term, especially in such a small area with a heterogenous population.

They were still in NATO. You're confused.

I'm all for cooperation and wish to remain in the EU and even foster an even more tight partnership with European partners including militarily, but I think NATO give Europe the illusion that they're safe because of America. I'd rather we took care of ourselves.

We left NATO's military command and sent your guys home. It was a small step in the right direction.

If NATO was smart, they'd have invited ALL the ex-Soviet countries, INCLUDING Russia, to join, right in 1991. People even in Moscow then we're excited to become a part of Europe and of Western society. They wanted to.

But, that chance was wasted, and now, it is what it is, and we have all this crap between Russia and Ukraine, etc.

Of course, both being NATO members didn't stop Greece and Turkey fighting over Cyprus either...
