Is it an "insult" or "affront"...

...for a male world leader to give flowers in greeting to a female one?

German tabloid "Bild" seems to think that when Putin recently met with Angela Merkel at his residence in Sochi, and presented her a bouquet of flowers (instead, apparently, of shaking hands with her)

this was a sexist affront on his part, a reminder that she is a woman, and lesser than him: Warum Putins Blumen an
    Merkel ein Affront sind

I'm not sure. He does like to greet women with flowers. It is a Russian thing. In Russia, women very much like flowers, and like when men give them such, on dates and whatnot.

Which is why, in Moscow and other cities, you see not only lots of legit flower shops, but tons of shadier folks selling them illegally on the street everywhere, with police raiding them and chasing them off

but it's pointless. Every unlicensed stand they shut down, new one springs up in the area an hour later lol

Russian girls love their flowers. And men gotta get them somewhere...

And Putin is certainly a traditionalist in that regard, again. Always a bouquet ready for every lady he meets...

Here, also in Sochi, I believe, with Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, the President of Croatia, last year

I've noticed that when women receive medals from him at the Kremlin, they too always get flowers, such as pop singers Zhasmin

    and Zara

the now famous Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

or the young figure skater, Pyeongchang Gold Medallist Alina Zagitova

Men being awarded DO NOT receive flowers

And here - some student in Yakutia, in Siberia, who, I believe, was giving him a tour of the local university

Actually, the only man I recall Putin giving flowers to, is Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Orthodox Church

lol And he is like, God's emissary on Earth, or whatever, I suppose he doesn't live by normal gender rules haha

I don't see it as sexist...a nice gesture.

There are variations in cultural norms. That in itself is not necessarily sexist.

    Correct!

Different countries have different cultures and customs.

Variety is the spice of life...

It's better than him singing love songs (Diamond and Streisand reference).

lol I've mentioned it before, even when I went to high school here in Canada, I became known among other guys, by the girls, for exactly this: I was the only one, aside from other Russians (but most of those guys only went out with Russian chicks too, unlike me, who figured I didn't come to a new country to NOT try out new things with new people hehe) who would bring flowers to a date, and who would also always pay for the date. Made me fairly popular with the beautiful gender, that... It really is apparently fairly unusual here.

Until I saw the very last photo at the bottom, I was more or less assuming that if Putin gave a bouquet of flowers to a guy, he would be accusing him of being gay.

    Or maybe he still is??
