[General Warning post #28] Ignore the concern trolls.

There are a lot of pundits and commentators — mostly conservatives — who are counseling liberals and Democrats to mute their criticism of Trump or at least keep it more civil, with the idea that forthright anger will hurt the cause in the next election:

Screw that. We just got through an election where most of the halfwit yahoos who voted for Trump said they did so because he didn’t talk like a politician. Trump spoke right from his dispeptic gut, insulting absolutely everyone with whom he had an issue, including grade-school name calling of his own party mates. His messaging was a steady stream of vulgarity and personal slurs. And now we’re told by the concern trolls that those hate-loving Trumpsters will be turned off by hearing hard truths in hard terms from the left.

Fuck Trump, fuck his voters, and fuck the concern trolls. We just had an election where the Democrat was an absolute model of dignity and restraint, while her opponent was the most vile candidate in the history of American presidential campaigns, backed by the most vile supporters. Where did babying the feelings of those morons get us? I’m done with it. Maybe if we stop being so politic with our rhetoric, we can finally light a fire under the non-voters, whose policy preferences mostly match ours, but who are too bored by a polite and restrained campaign to bother actually showing up on Election Day. Trump shook up the world by being a dishonest asshole. Maybe being honest assholes will counter that.

    Seconded, motion carried.

I have no intention of turning 78 other cheeks when they can't be arsed to turn one.

Our country is in grave and immediate danger. We don't have time to "go high."

I know I started a thread on this very subject within the past week. I'll have to do some digging.

Don't be concerned, everything is being taken care of in due time.

    Trust the plan.

Wow, you're as funny as Trump saying that the nuclear threat from North Korea is over. Hey, have all the prisoners from North Korea's vast sprawling prison camp complex been released? When did THAT happen??!?

I find the argument of the concern trolls particularly hard to stomach right now. If this was, say, 1990, and people who were being mean to Bush were being warned that they might turn off his fence-sitting voters for the ‘92 election, that would seem plausible. Whatever your issues with the elder Bush, he was a reserved patrician with the manners of an earlier age, and so it makes sense that some who were drawn to him might be alienated by rough language and mean-spirited attacks. But those who voted for a Trump were actually drawn to rough language and mean-spirited attacks, or at least so completely insensitive to them that the most vicious and profane candidate in presidential history didn’t turn them off, even with the alternative being a model of decorum. Calling for the left to leash and neuter itself in the face of a guy who just won largely on the strength of being a rabid cur, just doesn’t make sense.

I remember the same droning from the right in the Bush years. It was all part of the plan. Everything was going to be great. The economy was going to get even stronger than it had been under Clinton, the tax cuts would more than pay for themselves, Iraq would be a cakewalk, and the war would set off a series of improvements in the Middle East. Those droning right-wingers wound up very surprised with how things turned out — the worst recession since the Great Depression, the highest deficits in history, Iraq a seemingly endless bloodbath, and the Middle East coming unglued. But, as you probably suspect, none of that came as a surprise to me.
