Senate overwhelmingly rebukes Trump with tariff vote

(CNN)For the second day in a row, the Senate pushed back on President Donald Trump, showing stiff resistance to his key policy decisions on tariffs and NATO even as the President is at a summit in Europe wrestling with allies over those same issues.
Senators voted overwhelmingly Wednesday calling on Trump to get congressional approval before using national security as a reason for imposing tariffs on other nations, as he did recently with steel and aluminum levies against Mexico, Canada and the European Union.

It's gotta be frustrating for Trump. He can't dictate like he could with his businesses. The CEO of the USA just can't issue edicts like he's used to.

The Senate/congress needs to get off their asses and do something about the unfair trade practices aimed at the US.

That takes leadership from the President. Since America is leaderless, Congress has no need to make up trade policy.

Donald Trump ran on being the Great negotiator. Donald Trump was elected on being the negotiator that was going to fix US trade imbalance.

Now you want the Congress to fix it? Why do we need Trump?

A non-binding resolution is exactly what this wimp GOP Congress can muster.

It is not even a slap on the wrist...it is like a veiled threat of maybe a slap on the wrist.

Trump was sent to reform school...you think veiled threats are gonna change his attitude?

And now for the rest of the story. For Republicans it was a simple way to end foolishness by Flake. Duh.

A Republican critic of President Donald Trump said Wednesday he will stop automatically opposing nominees to the U.S. Circuit Court following a symbolic Senate vote that made a statement against instituting trade tariffs.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., told The Hill he is satisfied with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's decision to hold a vote that challenged Trump's authority on tariffs.

"That was always the deal. Get a vote and it's dropped," Flake said.

The Senate voted 88-11 to approve a non-binding motion that backs Congress having a role when tariffs are proposed in the name of national security, which Trump has done against several countries in recent months.

Flake opposes the tariffs and was using his power as a crucial vote on judicial nominees to force Wednesday's vote. Now that he has ceased automatically opposing circuit court picks, The Hill reported the nomination of two circuit court judges — Britt Grant on the 11th Circuit and David Porter on the 3rd Circuit — can now proceed.

If they hadn't been sitting on their worthless asses so long and doing nothing about the unfair trade balances we've been bludgoened with for so long, your post might be wrong. As it is, every word you said is exactly right. They SHOULD be fired.

I always wondered how long is it going to be before somebody cones along as says "Why the hell are we giving the world unrestricted access to our market ?"

I never thought it was going to take 30 years. Senate has a comfort zone > clinging to stupidity.

So the Senate has decided they are going to DO something. That's nice. What were they doing before ? Playing chess ? And has anybody done any research on certain people's stock ownership in US companies operating overseas ? Here's a few possible suggestions > Jeff Flake, Glenn Beck, Ben Sasse, Mark Levin, (oh hell, anybody who's a never-Trumper)

We need him because before he came along, nobody was even taking about China, Mexico, et al beating the crap out of us, while we stood around and said "Thank you". Does that answer the question ?
