"Safety Valve"? What in case our opinion isn't correct? Or is a safety valve incase those dangerous minority groups try to speak out? The whole thing is a gaff. Wonder where Bill Clinton will use his SD vote.....Can we at least rename them - "superdelegates" sounds silly, like you expect them to leap tall buildings and run along side trains. Maybe we could call them babysitter delegates. Or voice silencing delegates....

Super delegates were put in place so that the political party wouldn't lose total control of the nomination process. They would have a group of pre-fabricated delegates who could vote the way the national party wanted them to if an unacceptable candidate were to attain a lead over a candidate that the party saw as more fit.

While I don't like the idea of Super Delegates, if the Republican Party had them they could ask them to cast their vote for Romney because McCain had the lead and they didn't feel he truly reflected the party's positions.

Basically it's a stop-gap in case the party doesn't trust the party members choice.

As I understand it, the SDs can vote for anyone THEY choose, no matter who the "regular delegates" chose. Now in this case, say Obama is the nominee, ya think Bill Clinton will cast his SD vote for him?
It seems to me that many dems were very upset that Al Gore lost his bid for the WH even though he won the popular vote. Isn't this about the same thing, maybe worse?

The Repubs are not without their own faults. The repubs wouldn't need to adopt a superdelegate system to oust McCain, they would simply need to do away with the winner-take-all system and Romney wouldn't be held back by his own system.

Exactly right!! I don't like the winner take all in the primaries.
