Why is America's prison population so high?

One word: Money. Isn't that always the root of a problem? Yes. And in this case, it's very true. Allow me to demonstrate.....

In the US, far too many people profit off of inmates. For example:

The guards unions don't want to inmate numbers decrease. A decrease in prison populations would result in less demand for their services, and could lead to lay-offs, lower hiring rates, less job opportunities and perhaps even wage reductions. Guards don't want to see numbers decrease.

Paytell doesn't want to see numbers reduced. They make a killing off of outgoing inmate phone calls. And inmates don't have another option, either pay their price or don't hear your loved ones' voices. Paytell doesn't want to see numbers decrease

Conmed doesn't want to see numbers drop. They provide cut-rate health services for huge profits within the system. Fewer numbers would mean less demand for their services. Conmed doesn't want to see numbers decrease

Oasis commissary doesn't want to see numbers fall. They sell cheap items at outrageous prices to make a killing off of inmates. You don't get fed much in jail, unless you order canteen you'll live in a perpetual state of hunger, which leads to huge profits for Oasis. And since they're your only choice, you can't shop around for a better deal. Oasis doesn't want to see numbers decrease

Bottom line, when an inmate goes home he's the only one who benefits. No one else. There's no money being made unless someone takes his place. That's why everything is a jail crime in the US, and that's why prison numbers will always be high.

$1.50 for 15 minutes. But you can't buy single calls. You have to buy a phone card with 6 calls on it for 12 bucks (3 dollar activation fee)

    80 cents

Our local jail has a website where you can send friends stuff,, I sent a friend a douche and a brown bag, because he got into drugs and stole from an old lady,, I'm not sure if it made it to him or not.

Yahoo answers says 3,264. Not the most reliable source, but that's a hard stat to find. But it doesn't really matter because one is too many in my opinion

I doubt it. Was it a county jail? County jails usually have relaxed rules where you can send in stuff. But regional jails and prisons usually only allow what they provide themselves

EDIT: My bad, just saw you said local jail. Yeah, doesn't surprise me that you can send in stuff there

LOL, awesome. Maybe he did get it. Some county jails even allow inmates to go outside and sit in a family member's car for visitation. Plus they have better food too. If you have to go to jail, that's the kind of place you want to be. Regional jails are the worst. All of the restrictions and violence of prison without any of the perks (drugs, education, programs etc.)

Some of you don't get it. Who builds state office furniture for pennies on a dollar? Do you people know that inmates man phone centers for a few cents a day? The list goes on and on. ..hell wasn't really inspiring to see the inmates make the US flags...oh that was so liberal, the nice inmate can learn a job, of course they have to be in prison to get one!
