Its not specific to America but progressives are basically reformists who believe that society should evolve as it modernizes.

That is a very basic definition.

Conservatives on the other hand wish to retain many traditional practices, particularly on the societal level, and do not feel that everything must change, or progress, as society moves along its path into the future.

    Correct.

The progressive movement began its formation out of liberalism, which is the notion of equality and liberty throughout all aspects of society and was first realized during the Age of Enlightenment, way back when. When the industrial revolution hit the world, many people who believed in liberalism became active participants in trying to change societies around the world and began the progressive movement. It is responsible for many positive things such as ending children working in factories and civil rights, giving women the right to vote, and equal protection under the laws but incorporated in the progressive movement are things such as abortion, homosexual issues, attacks on religion....and these are the areas where conservatives split from the progressives.

In today's culture, people often intertwine the meanings of progressive, liberal, and democrat to the point where they all mean roughly the same thing. Their definitions though are very different. Same with conservatism, you can break that down into many distinct areas also.

Sorry, I was not asking about historical progressivism. I just wonder who is calling themselves progressives in America.

It depends, the term has been butchered by both sides as April alluded too.

The right mainly uses it in a derogatory sense when describing the far left kinda like how they use the term teabaggers to describe the far right.

Therefore since nobody is using the term progressive as is properly should be, it doesn't really matter.
