    That's why I'm a conservative, not a republican.

The supposed party of free markets just elected a guy who called the free market a failure and wants to micromanage the economy.
Reagan was a man of big ideas. Trump is a man who's one idea is his own infallibility. Trump just doesn't think in terms of ideology. As a result, the person with the most influence on him is the one who spoke to him last.

    Trump's a liberal democrat. I'm a small government conservative. I'm thinking i don't have a dog in this fight.

As for background checks we do need moderate laws on guns.

But that has nothing to do with my top post.
The problem is that republicans have been working a long time to sell the idea that Democrats are just what @Humorme said we are.

It doesn't matter how many times we present facts, or how rational we are, conservatives will continue to believe what they've been programed to believe we think, and want. If there is anything political forums have taught me, it is that.

Actually, it's the actions of liberal media and political establishment that's convinced us we're hated by them.

Government can only address the general welfare of a country. It cannot be your moral conscience. Government should not exist to guarantee you a house, a job, or interfere in private family matters. If people, due to inability and / or physical disability need a helping hand, then government should play a role.

The baker who lost their business because they refused to bake a cake for a gay wedding went a bit overboard. Laws that mandate employers hire X number of minorities, Y number of gays, Z number of transgender, etc. are not legitimate functions of any government. Laws that infringe on your unalienable Rights on the pretext of solving some social problem are not legitimate functions of government either.

That government which governs least governs best. Local control is preferable to federal control.

But many did. I have said this before, but I really do think the number of republicans who came out publicly and endorsed Clinton hurt her. It hurt her with the progressives and the far left. Even the greens, who typically would have held their noses and voted for the democrat (they did for Obama) over Trump, didn't. They felt with all those ex Bush people, she could owe them something or they might expect something in return. Sort of a "lets get together and defeat Trump" thing without the specifics. Made people wary of her and her intentions.
