Yep and that is why third parties will never work.

it could work if there was proportional representation and equal financing for all parties - but both the major parties will never consider that change.

Not as long as the electoral college exists in its current form.

correct. that's another thing that must be changed as well, but it doesn't affect representatives.

Just think what would have happened in 2016 if the EC had been proportional in every state. I would even settle for uniform EC and primary rules for countrywide offices such as president.

    It does.

If you doubt that, just think about the criticism Bernie got for running as a Democrat. Imagine the coverage he would have gotten running as an independent.
    Thanks from Panzareta

It would be easy to make it proportional in every state, dontchathink? Then third parties might have a chance and an upheaval of the existing system could be avoided
    Thanks from labrea

Last time I checked, Switzerland had a much more democratic government than the US. If you do not want to live in a civilized society, try Galt's Gulch down in Chili.

it is difficult for those who live in a two-dimensional political world to see in multi-dimensional ways. for Americans, there are no people alive who did not see politics in this two-dimensional reality. but, it is important to change to new things when the situations dictate it.
