    Ted Kaczyinski

Writing this because of the series on Netflix right now.

Did anyone agree with anything the Unabomber had to say about society? How much has technology corrupted our society?

My main question for this thread is... Are we better or worse off for the advances in technology the last couple of centuries?

You mean the series on A&E?

I've been watching that too because I did not know too much about this case.

I think it's a mixed bag - if were not for technology we would not have this board for instance Think about how much you use it every day from research to shopping to looking up directions and everything in between.

On the other hand I think it's made it harder for people to form personal relationships like they used too.

I still can't get over it when I go to a restaurant and see a family all sitting their using their cell phones without talking to each other

Or when I see it used to threaten and bully people.

Also it has enabled the government and outside companies to know just about everything about you - which is, indeed, scary.

BTW, good to see you post and hope the new job is going well!!

Well, I'm not current on his veiws but
    1) much easier to track people
    2) much easier to prove guilt
    3) much easier to squeeze people- taxes, etc.
    4) much easier to become a mono store . Amazon.

A lot of his views made a lot of sense then, but are outdated now. His need was to be heard so that we could educate and possibly prevent a base dependence on technology from forming. But we are way past the point of no return, now.

I never experienced the necessity of hurting someone to gain something... so I can't speak on that. He is on his own there.

Technology is both good and bad.

Great for Education. Bad for cult like thinking.

But over all I both love and hate it. Convenience, yet frustration.

    He was completely wrong.

He was an insane individual who wanted to bomb and found an excuse, if it wasn't technology he would have found another reason to do it.

He was incredibly intelligent and no one could find him. He sent letter bombs made with everyday components. It wasn't untill his manifesto was printed, his brother knew his writing style and turned him in.

He wasn't completely wrong in his writings as many of his points are very true today. He would have been heard, eventually, if he wasn't such a pessimist and violent person and killed a ton of innocent people.

Actually, it was on Discovery, first. Kinda brilliant.

Ya know. This is actually an interesting question. It is easy to dismiss Ted Kaczynski as a "nutcake", and just ignore his philosophies. However, many of the observations in his manifesto were actually kinda spot on; particularly his suggestion that, as we become more technologically advanced, we surrender our individual autonomy to technology.
