Conservatives believe it should be up to the individual to either fail or succeed based on their motivation.

    That is essentially the difference.
I didn't ask for the difference. I asked what makes YOU conservative? What principles do you subscribe to that you consider conservative?

Funny how since Trump got rid of Obama's regulations on business that this has trickled down to the lowest unemployment rate since 1973 isn't it?

Once again, I must ask that you step away from the PARTY for a moment, please.

    This is about ideology.

    Some sounds downright socialist.

I appreciate everyone who wishes to weigh in, but this is primarily directed at our right-leaners:

I'm interested in the conservative principles which the espouse/the reason they claim the label.

    I just told you.

I believe in equality of opportunity, not equality of outcomes.

Bullshit. Equal in OPPORTUNITY perhaps, equal in the eyes of the law, certainty. But equal, as in "everybody should end up in the same place?"
Nonsensical gibberish on your part and you offer absolutely ZERO objective or credible proof that what you claim is NOT nonsensical gibberish, garbage.

Civil rights was a conservative issue, so was the clean air and water act, so was ending the war in Vietnam and eliminating the draft, a strong minimum wage, pro union, a balanced budget without gutting revenues and giving massive tax cuts to the 1%, all of those were "Conservative" in 1968..now, not so much...again, the definition and metrics of "conservative" have devolved into the current hate and despise party, no longer recognizable as anything like the GOP of the 1960's
Thanks from labrea, Wonderer and MaryAnne

Wonderer posed an ideological question, not one that we claim is being fulfilled in any meaningful way at the moment.

The current crop of republicans (most of them) are not conservative hence the term RINO.

No, the current crop has incorporated the racists and bigots of the country and embraced oligarchy. And the few sane Republicans left are being demonized as RINO's.
