I considered myself a moderate conservative, I believed in law and order and fiscal conservatism for the country.

Tax breaks are fine, for those making legitimate investments... not just on "income."

I would still be a conservative if it were not for the fact they are more interested in stooging for corporate America and frankly, preserving racism and have no interest in traditional values, and that includes religion.

I have to be able to sleep at night...

    Thx

A church's platform should (at least theoretically) be based/built on a particular faith/core set of beliefs. Just as a political party's platform should be based/built on a particular core set of beliefs.

Fleshing out the analogy, my inquiry was not into what church people attend, or why they attend the church they do but why they subscribe to a particular faith/religion -- i.e., what the core beliefs/principles are that prompt them to claim that faith/religion.
I do the same every year before I vote. I do not subscribe to any Religion. My faith is very simple, one creed, but I know when I am being told wrong.

    Because lack of choice.

Outside of the republican party the closest thing would be the conservative party but if you've ever studied their platform you would probably die from laughter.

This is a big reason why the Tea Party caught on and our frustration with the current crop of republicans in office now.

Its why I voted for Trump, hopefully to instigate a civil war and let more conservatives rise to the top.

There was not a thing I said that was putting OG down. I was explaining to him that the question I was asking was different from the one he was answering. That was not a put-down.

I am not "publishing a paper in a few days." The publication for which I write will be publishing an article in a few days which includes reasons why I (and other contributors) consider ourselves conservative. I'll be free to share my portion of it then. In the meantime, I was interested in having a discussion here about why other people consider themselves conservative.

I'm not certain why, MaryAnne, but lately I get the feeling you're itching to pick a fight with me. I'm not looking for a fight. I was asking an honest question and inviting discussion.

But see, that is not a problem with conservatism, that is a problem with the republicans.

Nothing in conservatism denotes preserving racism or selling out to corporate America, just the opposite in fact.

See? You took this as personal. There is nothing personal in my answers.

You did tell OG that was Republican when he posted the platform. Conservative is mostly Republican.

I am often out of step with my fellow Democrats. Many drift over in to,Socialsm. I am much too moderate for that.

So, are you saying that republicans are not conservatives?

I agree, the party has been taken over by people who have no interest in American values, they would sooner see 1930s Germany here.

I do feel sorry for folks who have had to stand there and watch their party being taken over by a bunch of thieves and liars, but it is up to THEM to get a handle on their own party.

The two-party system is fine, as long as the players are basically honest brokers, if one side is going to lie at every turn democracy has no chance, we are lost, stuck in the mire...

    Thx

I was responding to your comment that I put OG down. You appeared to be reading something insulting into my comments when there was nothing of the sort.

Yes. I told OG that he was referring to a political party platform and explained I was asking about ideology rather than party.

I agree that your views, as I've seen you express them, are moderate and do not drift over into Socialism. (And this is a perfect example of what I was asking - with "moderate" and "Socialism," you're describing ideology rather than party ("Democrat"). That is what I'm driving at, so thank you. )

I beg to differ, many democrats in the south and Midwest are conservatives. Even here in New England with the strong Catholic Irish, they are conservative democrats. Tim Kaine and Joe Biden both are conservative democrats.
