    And glass-making, textiles, clothing, paper, etc. Heavy manufacturing generates wealth for the middle class that cannot easily be replicated.

    The loss of the American paper industry is probably the single biggest cause of entrenched poverty in the Northeast and, to some extent, the Northwest.

    Paper and logging were staples in northern New England. Much of it gone. Horrifying that the US for a while would cut down trees and ship them to China to make paper. We basically lost the trees and caused massive pollution to ship trees. Horrific leaving large swaths without jobs or anything to do. These areas have gone from blue to red. I grew up on the St Lawrence Seaway and the towns along it have experienced the same. I dont think the Northwest has had as much difficulty due to geography, they are closer to China so ships can come and go there. The East Coast is too far so the poverty can be greater.
