There are conservatives and there are movement conservatives.
One is not like the other.
One is helpful in contributing to policy debates.
    The other is useless.
    One embraces facts.
    The other denies facts.

I used to actually be a conservative at one time.

    Still am, actually.

I bet a lot of you are too!

Ever have "sweet dreams," whatever happened to those?

Now that Chris is gone, I guess it's up to "US" now to keep Yes aloft.

    We're working on it guys...

    Thx
    Thanks from Madeline

Update: Smaller government is better only regarding issues that conservatives like. When it means preventing abortions, letting people carry guns under their coats, or expelling brown people from the country, big government is great!

    2. America first. Our workers, our businesses, our borders. We are not the world policeman.
When it helps American corporations trade around the world, we need to police the world.

    3. Certain institutions and people working within them deserve respect, as a rule. The U.S. military, our police and fire forces, religious leaders, teachers, health care workers.
Yes, except for teachers and health care workers. They're liberals and therefore suck. Critical thinking is bad and should be discouraged; health care is only for those who can pay cash.

    4. Government policies should support marriages, families and children. Those policies should not encourage destructive behaviors like opioid drug taking, gambling, careless spending and excessive debt, etc.
Gambling should not only be encouraged, government should play bookie. It's the best way to get poor people to volunteer to play more tax.

Whut? The confusion or the Op?

I think the Op captures the Eisenhower brand of conservatism.

Which mostly fits me, but all the self-described conservatives on PH are constantly calling me a f'king liberal.

Which is confusing, as the Hillarybots call me a f'king pinko.

    Which actually is accurate! I'm a progressive/pinko/con-servative!

    Lol.

No, and I am a little creeped out by that suggestion. This is not the proper place for ANYONE to address a serious emotional problem.

The "problem" is, I can't think of anyone on PH who ACTUALLY qualifies as a conservative, although many self-identify as one.

    MAYBE @John T Ford and @THOR, but certainly not @Bronwyn or @Crusher.

HITH does an ideal of "smaller government" jive with oppressive government acts, intended to shut down citizens who are protesting?

Maybe your premise is faulty and there is no way a living person could possibly live up to your definition of a conservative? Or why would a smaller gov be unable to shut down protestors? Lots of smaller governments are able to stifle dissent.

    Your thoughts?
The problem with ALL political labels is that they're so often moving targets. That said, I think #1 and #2 are fair descriptors of traditional conservatism. #3 is a view held by many conservatives but I'm not certain that it itself is a fundamental principle of conservatism. #4, I suppose goes to social conservatism (versus fiscal.)

The party-over-country GOP extremists who've latched onto Donald Trump aren't "American conservatives".

    You stated them correctly.

The problem is, conservatives are an endangered species. Real conservatives are getting as rare as whooping cranes, crowded out by neoconservatives and authoritarians masquerading as conservatives.
