The problem with the Cruz bill is that is was too narrow. Cruz' bill only addressed aliens seeking asylum and separation. Cruz' 'solution' keeps the
practice of charging aliens violating 8US sec 1325 with a crime.

Trump's whole ploy was to charge the parents with a crime so that he could separate the families.

Cruz' legislation keeps the moronic Trump's policy's provision.

Cruz' proposal is campaign year...'show you're do something' legislation.

As I have stated many times - it is my opinion that the majority of Americans are - like every other nationality - decent, honest people who care very much about what is done to children. President Trump and his camp followers have realised - albeit belatedly - that this is a bridge too far. They will back-pedal furiously, whilst simultaneously claiming this debacle is the fault of previous administrations, but this too shall pass.

I don't know enough about US Constitutional Law to be specific, but I suspect part of the problem lies in the nature of your system of governance. You appear much too dependent upon the virtue of the man you elect every four years. AFIK, only largely undemocratic, third world countries (the Philippines, Indonesia, etc.) employ the type of republic you have - wherein one man is the head of executive government, head of state, commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and is instrumental in appointing your highest level of judiciary. It is a very well-balanced man (and you have been fortunate to have had a number of those,) who does not see that role as something akin to an emperor. Nixon is reported to have once quipped that he had more power than Louis XVI - and in the global sense, I suspect he was correct.

Most European, and many Asian republics employ a President as head of state, and whose powers are limited to ensuring constitutional compliance, whilst electing a Prime Minister whose duties encompass executive government. They also treat their head of executive government as a necessary functionary, eschewing pomp and ceremony in respect of the role - which, I suspect, helps restrain delusions of grandeur. Whilst I would not presume to advise Americans upon their systems of governance; these are matters worthy of consideration.

Were I an American citizen, the concerns I would entertain would not devolve about a latter day Caesar, but rather a variation of Fascism. Your penchant for religiosity, combined with your flag waving variety of nationalism, allied to your lionisation of both the corporate sector and the military would trouble me. It is a deceptively short step from there to designating 'enemies of the state' and 'undesirables' - and you came close during the McCarthy era.

Forgive me if I sound presumptuous; but you are a very worthwhile people - do not let the neo-Nazis and the God-botherers coerce you into becoming otherwise.

I suspect Nixon would have likened himself to Louie the 14th, also known as the Sun King, as opposed to the 16th who was Guillotined, but other than that, your considerate post seems bulletproof.

    Thank you!

Yes, it's going to get ALOT worse, Trump is just starting to take the gloves off...

Reminds me of the type of situation where a guy punches someone in the face as hard as possible and the person getting punched doesn't even blink.

Are you ready for the counterattack?

Yes, and Nixon had an "enemies list."

It wouldn't surprise me at all if Trump had one as well.

The wall would be a monument to bigotry, an environmental disaster and a horrendous waste of taxpayer money.

Opposing it is a worthwhile effort.
