Tea party warns GOP on debt ceiling

Tea party warns GOP on debt ceiling

    July 16th, 2011 at 10:00 am
    CNN reports

Washington (CNN) — Right now, some Republican lawmakers in Washington may be wondering how to wiggle out from between a rock and a hard place.

    (snip ... )

This week, Tea Party Patriots’ members and supporters are intensely calling various lawmakers: establishment Republicans, so-called “Blue Dog” Democrats and those freshmen Republicans elected to the House with tea party support.

“I think that it’s accurate to call it pressure,” Martin said. “The other thing is, we’re holding these … freshmen accountable. A lot of these freshmen ran on the promise that they were not going to increase the debt ceiling. Now, they’re in D.C. with all of their colleagues on the Hill. And they’re buying into the company line, forgetting about the fact that the American people have elected them not to do that.”

For those who vote to raise the debt limit, “The American people are going to watch what they did, watch what happens to the economy and next November, I think there will be consequences,” Martin said.

Tea Party politics .... dangerous stuff for the Republicans! Usually it's the Democrats that are famous for eating their own. The Dems got nuthin on those Tea Partiers.

I don't think Tea Party Patriots recognize mainstream GOP members as 'one of their own'.

Which explains why they have no problem taking down the GOP. It's going to hurt us in 2012 just as surely as it did in 2010.

BY 'us' do you mean the GOP?

You may be right, in the short term. But what might initially harm a party might eventually help to right the political ship in this country for the long haul.

I kind of see the tea party as a back door third party. Time will only tell.

Yes and agreed on the TP being third party. Some elections are even running them that way. This will split the GOP votes resulting in mostly Democrat wins in 2012.

Gotta love the irony. A republican started the Tea Party (Dick Armey) and it came back to bit the GOP in the ass.

It wasn't a GOP ploy, it was a ploy by certain Republicans to change the direction of the party...and it's working.

Got a question.... why have a debt ceiling in the first place if you have no intention on abiding by it?

It puts a limit on spending, but growth and inflation will always eventually push the debt beyond the limit.

Our problem here isn't necessarily raising the debt limit to keep pace with inflation, but our national budget and national debt have far surpassed what we will be taking in as revenue.

2010 was pretty good for the GOP. Far better than it was for the dems.
