You've never heard of a social sanction??? Here:

    https://www.britannica.com/topic/sanction

Sanction, in the social sciences, a reaction (or the threat or promise of a reaction) by members of a social group indicating approval or disapproval of a mode of conduct and serving to enforce behavioral standards of the group.

    Is that clear?

I said one has a right to an opinion -- not that one shouldn't care about what others think. And people 'justify, rationalize and/or disguise' opinions because such opinions result in a social sanction.

The question I posed here seeks to clarify the difference between racism and racial identity as it relates to a person's opinions? I asked the question because if you are going to apply a social sanction to a person for merely having an opinion, how exactly are you different from the racist?

Racial discrimination is illegal in the us and many parts of the world. Having an opinion, on the other hand, is not.

If a person doesn't care what others think about their opinions, then they need not 'justify, rationalize and/or disguise' them.
But racist opinions are not well thought of generally, and so racists (and sexists, &c.) seek seemingly rational arguments to make in order to convince others that their opinions have a sound basis in fact. It used to be called "scientific racism."

Same could be said about accusations of racism -- that they are opinions without sound basis in fact.

please tell me you're not saying that there aren't ever any legitimate allegations of racism.

Of course there are. In fact, from the perspective of social science, most people identify with their own race.

The question now is how is this different from racism -- or are they the same thing?

And if society stigmatizes a person for having an opinion, how is that different from what racists do?

seriously? These things really need to be explained to you? People aren't stigmatized simply because they have an opinion. It depends on the opinion. Using your logic it would make people pedophiles if they stigmatize people who think it's ok to rape kids. Surely, you must know these things.
