seriously. Please explain this concept to me. What is it and why does it get such a bad rep?

Political viewpoints formed from personal identity, social groups, vulnerabilities.

The reason they get some criticism is because some feel they can divert attention and energy away from fundamental issues.

: politics in which groups of people having a particular racial, religious, ethnic, social, or cultural identity tend to promote their own specific interests or concerns without regard to the interests or concerns of any larger political group

In my own words, I would describe people who ascribe to identity politics as erroneously assuming that differences between groups are greater than differences within groups.

    That is just patently false.

heard Bill Maher say that HRC lost the election because she engaged in "identity politics". That seems to be a recurrent theme. What does that mean? Calling people "deplorables"?

I would say what Ron Paul does. We do not derive our rights as members of any group - they are ours as individuals. When society is pitting one group against another over and over the point is lost and it becomes a competition and source of contention that divides us. Instead we should unite in our demand for all our rights.

And because it reduces people to labels.

And when something is in a box, there is a clear path to what you need to do with all things placed in that box.

It's easy mode under particularly difficult circumstances. Sometimes.

And once again it presumes the false notion that differences between groups are greater than differences within groups.

When people make political decisions, they are supposed to do what's best for everyone. Identity politics is when people favor policies only because they benefit THEIR particular group.
