    Being black in Russia

    Interesting recent video from BBC:

They interview black and mixed race people who live in Russia, about what it's like. African students at the universities vs. mixed-heritage people born in Russia mainly to such students in marriage with Russian women.

Naturally, the Africans in Russia report rather different experiences vs. "black Russians".

The ones they interview, are prominent people.

Samson Sholademi, a well known blogger and journalist

He was the first black Russian, I believe, ever, to run for office, last year, for a Moscow district council seat, with the Communist Party

I think he won that too.

Accomplished guy, in other words. And a patriot, who doesn't believe Russia is, at all, a racist society, of course.

    And the woman, Katya Keyru

She was the first non-white/Slavic player on the national women's basketball team

Only other such woman, later, was some American who moved to Russia and got citizenship, very recently, just this March, in fact: US basketball player joins Russian team

    Her three brothers

One on the very left is a model and actor; one at right, sitting with her, is a pro basketballer like herself; and middle one is a retired pro boxer turned reality TV star lol They are all kinda famous, almost like Russia's Kardashians, not THAT rich yet, but, fairly well off too.

She's one of the most beautiful women in sports over there also, far as I am concerned

This too would insulate her somewhat: truth be told even the worst bigots in Russia cannot hate on someone as hot as her lol I mean that, they are human men too. I've actually seen people on far right sites there basically say it out loud haha

So, of course she too has had fairly little experience of racism, especially since making a name for herself.

When she married the footballer Ivan Novoseltsev in 2015

there were some racist trolls online criticising him for it. And others actually cursing back at them and shutting them up lol

That's about the worst she may deal with, these days.

For the actual Africans, the students and such, it is different...

You can face actual violence there, simply for looking different, that's a fact.

Here, two young black guys, probably African students, get beat the hell out of by taxi drivers, in Moscow, likely over a fare dispute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlJ8hLt2oXQ

You think they'd stomp white/Slavs like that? Nope. Someone like me, a "darkie" from Caucasus, hell yes.

Lots of intolerance and violence over there, still.

And it is worst for those who weren't born there, don't know the language or the culture...

Plenty. They have millions of "gastarbaiters" ("guest workers") every year mainly from ex-Soviet -stans in Central Asia.

These people do most of the worst and dirtiest construction work

They also do street cleaning and maintenance for municipalities

and sort garbage at the utilization and recycling plants

In the southern regions, one may also see lots of them working on the farms too

Central Asia has filled in a lot of Russia's labor shortages, over the recent years... They do all the work, basically, that white Russian Slavs do not want to lower themselves to. That said, associating them with just dirty menial jobs is wrong, it is a nasty stereotype that they have been fighting against, as I wrote here: Life of migrants in Russia

Anyway, in the Far East, you also have folks from North Korea, also mainly working in construction there

but also more and more fish processing plants there are hiring Koreans too, as less and less younger Slavs want to do this kind of gross, smelly work

And others too, lots of people from Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova. And even some from outside ex-USSR.

The Africans too, most come in as students, as I said

Russia's universities are cheaper than Europe, yet still offer a decent education, certainly by African standards. And, they have a tradition of welcoming students from the Third World since the Soviet era.
