I taught basic American history to 4th and 5th graders for a decade. I was pretty good at it — I won our state’s Newsweek Social Studies Teacher of the Year award even before I became a full-time high school history teacher. Even so, I consider myself more a student of history than a teacher. Would that we all were; students of history, that is. Maybe we would learn.

I study, investigate, seek to understand, explain, and learn from what has happened in the past. Not just on the surface, but in the corners, under the layers, in the shadows.

Parallels are easy to find if you’re looking. They are easy to miss if you’re in denial. But in the history of mankind, in the history of nations, in the history of America, there are few things that portend tragedy and destruction as clearly as government ordered separation of families.

Perhaps a few photos will help jar the memories of folks who don’t recall those previous times in our nation’s short history where we saw such horror inflicted on innocent men, women and children.

‘Barbaric’: America’s cruel history of separating children from their parents
A mother unleashed a piercing scream as her baby was ripped from her arms during a slave auction. Even as a lash cut her back, she refused to put her baby down and climb atop an auction block.

The woman pleaded for God’s mercy, Henry Bibb, a former slave, recalled in an 1849 narrative that is part of “The Weeping Time” exhibit at the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture, which documents the tragic history of children being separated from their parents during slavery. “But the child was torn from the arms of its mother amid the most heart-rending shrieks from the mother and child on the one hand, and the bitter oaths and cruel lashes from the tyrants on the other.”

Her mother was sold to the highest bidder.

Enslaved mothers and fathers lived with the constant fear that they or their children might be sold away.

    […]

The Trump administration’s current crackdown on families that cross the border illegally has led to hundreds of children, some as young as 18 months, being separated from their parents. The parents are being sent to federal jails to face criminal prosecution while their children are being placed in shelters operated by the Department of Health and Human Services. Often, the children have no idea where their parents are or when they will see them again.

The policy has generated outrage among Democrats and immigration advocates. And it has conjured memories of some of the ugliest chapters in American history.

“Official US policy,” tweeted the African American Research Collaborative over the weekend. “Until 1865, rip African American children from their parents. From 1870s to 1970s, rip Native American children from their parents. Now, rip children of immigrants and refugees from their parents.”

    Huh.

I am strongly in favor of immigration law reform, but this issue doesn't seem to me to differ from any citizen sent to prison who has young children.

    What am I missing?

Actions of the parents have consequences. Would be better if they all were sent back.

A second rate poem. Which has ZERO legal impact. Which is NOT on the SoL, but was on a bronze plaque placed inside the pedestal years after the SoL was erected. We hav eevery right to say NO.

Funny how this was happening during the Øbama years and the left ignored it.

The policy of separating parents from children is not entirely new, either. Indeed, it is standard when adults who have committed a crime are arrested. The only alternatives are to create a detention system for families, a policy to which the ACLU objected under Obama (the policy is barred under a 1997 consent decree), or simply not to detain illegal entrants at all before their court hearings, allowing them to disappear into the country.
