Even if you deny that's what happened in 50's and the 60's, Steve Bannon has been exposed for using a modern day version of the southern strategy. Only, they used modern technology to aid them in their campaign of racial politics. Something, you've aptly refer to as "identity politics". Problem is you suffer from selective illiteracy. You can't read anything that shows you are either wrong or lying. Usually, you're doing both, like now.

    Mr. Stan,

That's the trouble with using blanket lists compiled by someone else without doing your homework.

The first, Arthur Ravenel, possibly legit that he switched parties due to the southern strategy, but the next, Byrnes, was an ex-politician who was a DINO (never a Republican), as he supported Eisenhower, Nixon, and Goldwater.

The next, Kirk switched parties in 1960, not because of the "southern strategy," but rather, political ambition, as did Lyons.

The next, Mesta, switched from Republican to Democrat in 1940.

Treen, probably legit contention he switched because of "southern strategy," but the next, Jack Cox switched in 1962 because he knew he couldn't win the democratic primary against John Connelly.

John Martin also switched in 1962 to run against entrenched Democrat Lister Hill, US representative since 1940.

Ronald Reagan, of course, not southern, so apparently the author of the list only brought him up because they were having trouble finding people.

Spence, probably legit because he switch because he didn't like the direction of the national Democratic party.

So what, out of the first 10, only 3 support your contention?

Add to that, out of 10s of 1000s of southern politicians, you only found these few, for the most part, minor pols, or state representatives, kinda shoots down your theory, wot?

    It's a true sucker's belief. It's Leftist propaganda.
No, it's historical fact. Yes, the GOP was founded on abolition. But that was a very different GOP. It's amazing to me how many conservatives don't understand these basic points of American history.... as if their history classes had pointedly avoided educating them on American political history.

When the GOP was the party of abolition, it was also the party that was more in favor of bigger government, and the party that was more in favor of a strong central government instead of states' rights. It was the progressive party, the party of the North, the party favored by racial minorities, the party favored by urban-dwellers and the academic elite, etc.

Take a look at the election map of 1900 and compare to 2000. Notice anything? What you should see is that McKinley, the Republican, won almost the exact same states as Gore, the Democrat did 100 years later. If you dig into the demographics, you'd see the reversal shows up in more ways than just the big-picture geography. Even within the states, the rural parts that used to favor Democrats came to favor Republicans, while the urban cores went from Republicans to Democrats. The racial demographics reversed, too.

What's been consistent in this country's history is a divide between two factions: (1) northern, liberal, activist-government, pro-centralization, multi-ethnic, urban, (2) southern, conservative, government minimalist, pro-states-rights, white supremacist, rural. The labels of those two factions changed over time (Federalist/anti-federalist, federalist/democratic-republican, etc.), but the overall geographic, demographic, issue coalitions stayed fairly consistent regardless of label. The people who were Republicans when they were the abolition party are the same kinds of people who would be Democrats today.
Thanks from the watchman and StanStill
