They always depict them roaring fiercely and stentoriously, which is just silly.

Since I was a child catching lizards, snakes and turtles, and visiting the crocodile part of the zoo, I’ve known that reptiles don’t roar. At best they hiss, and even then, only rarely. The reasons for this couldn’t be more obvious. In one simple sentence, I’ll sum it up:

If you go around roaring all the time you scare away your lunch, and you soon become a bigger dinosaur's lunch.

Now, why couldn’t all the world’s palaeontologists figure that out? At this point, as far as I know, I’m the only person with this view.

Ha - yes, let's face it, old Steve was always an entertainer first, a scientist fiftieth.

The tiny noises that they do make could be similar to a more powerful dinosaur counterpart.

Here's a bit more on the subject. Two New Mexico outfits teamed up to try to simulate a dinosaur sounds:

So the OP is wrong (or at least making assumptions that cannot be backed up)?

    True, and good points.

Mammals are noisy. Many insects are too, as are amphibians. However, it seems fish and reptiles evolved to be very quiet critters.

Huge crocodiles don't make a sound, even when you attack them. All you get is a hiss.

Dinosaurs aren't reptiles, they evolved into birds, which are noisy.

    I find the wonderment interesting.
I admit never giving much thought to it.
Quite frankly, it strikes me as an absurd conversation piece. Who cares ?

Now a study on why people focus on obscure and absurd topics would interest me.

I guess you'd have to interview a lot of college professors and research scientists. When I was contemplating grad school and thinking about an academic career, the most pertinent question someone asked me was "How big a freak are you?" You have to be pretty unusual to spend your time studying something as narrow as a Ph.D. requires.
