SpaceX to launch private moon mission in 2018! WOW! Whee! We're going where again?

    HAWTHORNE, Calif. --
SpaceX will send two people to the moon for a private mission sometime in 2018.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced Monday that two people paid a "significant amount of money" for the trip.

The individuals would launch on the Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center Launch Pad 39A and go around the moon, but not land on the surface.

This mission would take about a week. While SpaceX did not say how much the individuals paid for the mission, the price is comparable to what a crewed mission to the International Space Station would be.

The mission would happen in the first few months of 2018.SpaceX to launch private moon mission in 2018

    FFS! Name these bastards!

btw. it will cost what- 180 million to 350 million? I wish they would clearly give a ballpark number. FFS!.

Well!? I hope they take a better camera to film the cities there on the moon.

fascinating. this will be the first time in my lifetime that we have been to the moon (well kind of).

out of curiosity will there be any scientific research to the mission or this purely a pleasure trip? surely we wouldn't go to the trouble of sending humans to the moon without some scientific reward??

See Private industry can do it. No taxpayer dollars required.

See here, Private industry can't provide healthcare to all. AS taxpayer dollars are required.

Dang! How did your teacher get out?

If it happens, it will be LATE in 2018, not early in the year.

Are you forgetting the decades of research in rocketry and space exploration all done at public expense? Billions spent on figuring out how to do it, by NASA and the Pentagon...But yeah, private industry did it "with no taxpayer dollars required", once all the really hard parts were figured out. Oh and SpaceX is getting plenty of taxpayer dollars in tax credits and grants too. But forgetting all that, and all the taxpayer money that created the field of space exploration itself, yeah. No taxpayer dollars required.

This would be PURELY a pleasure trip for a couple of billionaires who likely simply want to be able to claim that they were the FIRST to do it. The lunar surface has now been completely mapped, so I cannot think of any possible scientific information that could be collected on a circum-lunar flight.
