Solar System Could Have More Than 100 Planets

Solar System Could Have More Than 100 Planets

The Solar System currently has eight recognized planets but before 2006 when Pluto was demoted to a dwarf planet, school children were taught that there were nine planets in our star system.

Now, as a group of scientists proposes a new way to classify planets, our celestial neighborhood may possibly have more than 100 objects that could be called planets.

It seems they want to re-promote Pluto back to "planet."

We don't want it back, now.

Its like you have nine kids in your family and one day your mom says "oh, by the way, we found out your little brother wasnt actually ours, so we left him at Walmart."

I support putting Pluto back to planet status myself.

I think Pluto is smaller than Walmart, which is WHY they demoted it to a 'dwarf planet'.

Scientists are looking for planet 9. It is believed to be way out there in our solar system. It is also believed to have a 10,000 earth year solar orbit.

I guess I always thought our solar system was not much further in distance than Pluto... in size.
    Thanks from BigLeRoy

I think one of the criteria for a planet is that it traps other objects nearby to orbit around it.

Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter, is the largest in this solar system. At 5,268 km at the equator, it is larger than Mercury.

Because that's the way they always used to teach it in the schools.....that Pluto was at the outermost edge of the Solar System. It was nonsense then, and is nonsense now. And yes, there IS a Super-Earth somewhere WAY out there in the OUTER Solar System, some planet bigger than Earth but smaller than Neptune. We will find it within the next two years, I think. We will likely find that it has a whole retinue of moons. And there will likely be a push to fund an unmanned probe to this newly discovered planet, which I would like to see named Persephone.
    Thanks from dcwusmc
