The ban on incest could also be related to the moral prohibition against adultery. If a man produces a child through marriage and another through a secret affair, there is the possibility that those offspring from separate mothers could have intercourse without knowing they are related.

On the other hand, monogamy is relatively uncommon among animals.

A species needs a reason for monogamy. In the case of humans, because we have such long childhoods it's difficult for just one person to raise children. It's not impossible, but in most cases it is difficult. Plus, males invest so much in their offspring they want to make sure the offspring they're taking care of is theirs. That's true for a few primate species.

But you're right, most species just want their DNA spread far and wide.

Myth and Meaning is a great read. Strauss is one of the best at explaing myth to those who don't have a PhD.
