As Dr. Parnia tells the Independent, death is scientifically defined by the heart no longer beating and blood flow being cut off from the brain. “Technically, that's how you get the time of death – it's all based on the moment when the heart stops,” Dr. Parnia states. “Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously.”
I call bullshit on all brain activity ceasing the instant a patient's heart stops beating.

I dimly recall it taking several seconds. During the French Revolution, guillotined aristo's heads were seen blinking and trying to speak as they lay in the basket after being chopped off.

    Found this.

    Asking for a friend.

    Not really a friend.

    Asking for the president.

Sounds like a pretty good definition to me. Of course, medical professionals need bright lines drawn for making a legal determination of death, but the legalisms don't necessarily define the process. If someone spends an adequate amount of time without breathing and pumping blood, the process of death will always reach a point at which it is irreversible. Exactly where that point of no return lies can vary.

Measurable brain activity quite likely ceases, in many cases, prior to the termination of subconscious thought.

I think the record is 45 minutes without being frozen, IIRC.

    I'm having a near-elaborated experience.

I fear the window for my interest may have passed away.
