    Synthetic meat

How these Silicon Valley companies are disrupting the meat industry with their 'meatless meat'

I just read this article which talks about various "meats" either made from plant materials or from growing actual animal/fish cells in an artificial environment.

These methods would be much more sustainable, require less land and less water and generate far fewer pollutants.

But GM techniques are used and there are GM components of these products.

In many ways (assuming they taste OK and consumers accept them) they would be a good thing in the world. But there are some who fear they have not been sufficiently tested and may pose a risk.

The story isn't long and is quite interesting.

    Don't ask.

You do not want to know.

If it tastes good eat it, just don't think about it.

I worked in a meat packing plant way long ago. Weiners get a bad rap. The don't contain any of the imagined horrors so many people talk about. The only real knock is that the cheaper ones do contain a lot of fat, and they do have a lot of preservatives, but not necessarily more than many other processed meats.

I was really hoping to get a discussion revolving around the twin concepts of the safety of GM foods and the unsustainable nature of raising meat for food. I guess not.

I read an article, and was going to make a thread on it, on whether eating synthesized human flesh would make a person a cannibal?

I couldn't see anything inb the article addressing the price. Is it more expensive to the consumer than real meat?

There are no health concerns with GM food as far as science goes, no cases of deaths or sickness so that's irrelevant.

As for sustainability that wouldn't be a problem technically, its only politically where we run into problems.

For instance, Bush wanted to create giant fish farms off of the west coast to not only supply ample food but reduce the decimation of local fish populations.

Politically it never got any traction.

We can do it easily if we have the political will to do it.

Its the same with human population, we could easily fit 10x the amount of people we have on the planet if we did it efficiently and were motivated to do so.

Keep trying to convince yourself of that...
