Honey bees existed at least 14 million years ago in North America, according to a fossil record recently identified by paleontologist-entomologist Michael Engle of the University of Kansas, Lawrence. The fossilized female worker bee, now at the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, was unearthed in paper shale from Stewart Valley, west-central Nevada. The geological epoch: Middle Miocene.

Engle, the lead author of research published in the May 7th edition of the Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, says the bee is definitely a honey bee. It has the distinctive hairy eyes, wing patterns and barbs on the stinger.

Unfortunately, this ancient bee--which Engle and his colleagues have named Apis nearctica--no longer exists. The researchers say it's most similar to the extinct species, Apis armbrusteri Zeuner from the Miocene epoch of southwestern Germany.

This 14-million-old fossil, unearthed in Nevada, is a honey bee, proving that North America did have a honey bee before colonists brought the European honey bee here in 1622.

Aren't there several different subspecies of honey bee?

Timing doesn't check out. There's been a massive die-off in the last 20, 30 years. Scientists suspect this is most likely caused by pesticides.

The U.S. allows many pesticides that are banned in Europe as harmful to the envronment, and the European bee population seems to be more stable.

But really, nobody knows. It's possible the bees are getting killed by some contagious disease we haven't so far discovered.

Possums in California. I saw a twenty pounder in the backyard just last night. Man what an ugly critter.

For the record, I'd be ok with being referred to as either "American citizen" or "white", since both are simply statements of fact.
Yet most Mexicans are not an invasive species since they are direct descendants of humans who predate all others in this hemisphere.

    Ms. Panzareta,

If they are Mexicans, why are they not in Mexico?

    Mr. Stan,

Liberals generally don't have a sense of humor.

    Hope that helps.

I was going to post a picture of mexicans as well, as a joke, because the forum trolls are unoriginal and completely predictable. And surprise, they beat me too it, except they are serious

    Lol.
I always heard it was brought over from Japan to be made into cheap, fast growing feed for cattle. No idea if there is any truth to that.

Their ancestors wandered all over the continent for eons. Why should they have to abide by your invasive standards?

Plus when they call themselves by the names they prefer, you white guys get all pushed out of shape. Apparently it's just easier for them to go by the names you selected for them, at this time.

    Ms. Panzareta,

Because they are not their ancestor. If they are illegals, they are invasive species.
