GM says itís mass-producing cars without steering wheels

    The future is 2019.

DETROIT (AP) ó General Motors says it is making the first mass-production autonomous car without a steering wheel or pedals.

The company says it has filed a petition with the federal government seeking permission to put the vehicles on the road sometime next year with no human backup drivers.

GMís Cruise Automation unit has announced plans to carry passengers in self-driving cars that wonít have a backup driver in 2019. The location of the service has not been revealed.

GM spokesman Kevin Kelly says the first of the autonomous Chevrolet Bolts is being tested. He says the company isnít announcing how many will be made.

This scares the crap out of me. I like to be in total control when I drive.

Every one of those cars comes with a lawyer in the trunk instead of a spare tire.

how easy will it be for the government to program your car.

Violate the law and the car drives you to the police station.

That’s the thing. I want to be in total control when I drive, but I’m far happier with everyone else on the road NOT having my life in their hands.

1,800 traffic fatalities in Canada in 2016, 40,000 in the US. That’s what happens when humans drive.

Again - the alternative to that is guys on day 4 of a bath salts binge happily driving along the same road as you and nothing anyone can do about it as he plows into a bus stop full of kids. Like we have now.

Many new cars do not come with spare tires anymore.

The dealer offered to sell me a spare tire and jack/lugwrench for a little more than $300.

You get a can of slime and a small compressor instead.

    No word on lawyers.

Well my understanding - at least in Telsa's case, it you can still put your hand on the wheel and drive it so I'm ok with that.

But I'm not ok with having no way to be able to take the wheel myself.

My understanding of GMs plan is no wheel to grab on to.

Newscaster on CTV today said he was given a test drive by Blackberry in a Lincoln MKZ. And he said it was terrifying for 90 seconds - and then you get used to it.

    I dunno.

We will have no choice but to "get used to it".

A little like driving on the wrong side of the road-scary at first, but when everyone else does it you "get used to it".

Progress will not be stopped, but there will always be people who resist...
