I WIsh We Knew Why This Was Happening

I always find these stories disturbing and kind of heartbreaking, and we have no real idea of why it happens. And, is it happening more and more because of something WE are doing?

I wonder if this occurred 1000 years ago or is it man made.

I was thinking on how the most powerful, the most affluent lived at the head waters of a water source and how access to those waters got less desirable further from the source.

The adage...shit flows downstream sticks in my mind.

Since whales are descended from mammals that, like seals, once spent time on land, perhaps, through some "birth defect" or other DNA scrambling, a whale will sometimes revert to an ancient instinct to return to land.

    The question of why ?
Would knowing why make 150 deaths bearable ?
I laugh at guesses, as if.
Humans always try to put an human emotion to it.

    Here is my explanation-
What we witnessed was a whale Olympic event.
The goal is to see how far up the beach they can get to and stay.
What we didn't witness- 1000 whales off shore watching

Yes, that's possible. But we just don't know. I wish we could communicate with the whales, so that they could tell us. Are we hurting them somehow, that is leading them to commit suicide like this? That is a very disturbing thought to me.

I think it's a little speculative and human-centric to assume human guilt in this. I've noticed this tendency to overattribute every unexplained phenomenon to ourselves.

These whales travel in pods. The pods stick together. They do things in groups. This group decided to swim to a place where they ended up getting stranded. Whales are often smart and social. Some being stranded my have resulted in more and more of them staying nearby to try to help those that were stranded.

What actual evidence is there that people caused those whales to kill themselves? If none, why should we be start with the assumption humans did something to cause it?

Maybe the whales have their own cults that promise members they will get to heaven if they participate in mass suicide.

The other question I always have in these types of cases is whether in fact the frequency and magnitude of these occurrences are increasing or is it that with the far greater amount of news coverage and the greater interest in the environment, to use a broad term, just makes us more aware of them.

Again, I would say that we just don't know. We should try to find out.

I'm not saying we should START with the assumption that humans are doing something that is causing this. But I think there have been some recent studies that have suggested that cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) are bothered by all the additional NOISE we are adding to the world's oceans, and maybe it disrupts their sensitive sonar systems or something. Some of the SOUNDS we are emitting in the oceans are LOUD and can travel hundreds of miles, apparently.
    Thanks from BigBob
