If I were to inadvertently trigger Alexa with a misinterpreted message it might think that I wanted her to contact someone. This could result in a situation like this. The Amazon Echo Tap required the user to actually touch the device before it began listening. A firmware update changed this to a user option. Is it time to put that option in every Echo device or should the awake word be something less common? Amazon gives you four choices now; Alexa, Amazon, Echo, and Computer.
You're becoming a slave to nightmare technology.

Just wait till you see the fun you're going to have when you get your first self driving car!

Amazon and rest of the tech giants should be paying people who buy all this crap for being beta testees.

Each time I hear one of these stories I ask "how can people use these things" - but I do get it. It's neat and convenient. I'd love the device if it wasn't listening to everything you were saying - and recording it.

Before anyone runs from across the forum and says "Amazon says it's not listening in, get your facts correct" - I say, bullshit. You only know what Amazon told you - yet it's been proven.
I think it's a great thing for the disabled.

I keep seeing an ad where one of these things starts the car for the family. What could possibly go wrong there?

I think it cool that you can activate it by saying "Computer!" though ... just like Star Trek. If I recall the original, though, you had to activate the computer manually before you could talk to it - unlike TNG, where you could just shout it out to activate a conversation.
I suppose if you had a kid named Alexa, you'd be in for a lot of problems.

Probably. Don't be playing Billy Joel's song "Downeaster Alexa" (named after his daughter Alexa), either.

Amazon has that covered... The default "wake word" is "Alexa." However, you can easily change it to "Amazon," "Echo" or "Computer."

Could be worse, think about it...

Why don't the tech people think about the possibilty of this kind of thing being a problem? It reminds me of a coffee maker I bought that had a blinking red light to let you know when it needed cleaning. Problem is, it doesn't know if you're just making another pot of coffee or if you've running cleaner through it so the light just keeps blinking into perpetuity like the turn signal on the proverbial octogenarian's Crown Victoria.

I even unplugged it and plugged it back in and no change. It never stopped until after not cleaning it for so long it quit working all together.

You're telling me a bunch of engineers didn't ask themselves how it would know if it were cleaned before they said "hey, this is great idea?"

I'm starting to think they do this on purpose just to fuck with people.

I'm not sure I understand... they did consider the possibility of people named "Alexa." That's why they allow you to switch to a different wake word, if desired.
