New Genus Of Gibbons Discovered In Chinese Tomb

Last year, one of the big science stories was the discovery of a new species of orangutan living on the island of Sumatra. It is not every year that we discover a new species of great ape on planet Earth!!

Gibbons are the 'lesser apes'. They look like monkeys, and are often confused for monkeys, but they are NOT monkeys, they are apes. This is an extraordinary discovery, for this is an entirely new genus of gibbons, and these gibbons were alive quite recently, within recorded history. They also represent the first KNOWN case of humans driving a primate into extinction. They certainly won't be the last. The Hainan gibbon, discussed in the article, is ALMOST extinct.
