Will the world end on Wednesday?

Will the world end on Wednesday?

Are these people insane, I mean creating black holes can be very dangerous to say the least, but these idiots want to sustain a black hole. That big sucking sound may not be just about jobs anymore!

Fear not, we are in very little danger.

In simplified form, all the LHC will do is smash particles in to each other at vast speeds to see what will happen. The huge speeds, and resultingly huge amount of kinetic energy involved means the reaction could, in theory, make some tiny little black holes.

The main reason this isn't anything to worry about, however, is because rays of much greater power are regularly smashing into the earth many times every day. If we're right that these collisions are capable of making black holes, then it's clear that black holes that tiny are no danger to us. If they were, we wouldn't have lasted long enough to build this thing.

I hope not. Then we wouldn't here what the Paul announcement was.

The black holes that could be created will be on the order (I'm guessing, trying to remember quantum physics) of aroung 9 orders of magnitude bigger than the particle that is collided, if you assume the hole to be spherical and you do the math (volume of a sphere is 5/3 pi r^3) the black hole will be puny and its localized gravitation field will be very puny reletive to the black hole that was encountered in the 80's Disney epic "The Black Hole". There for no worries, besides, isn't the new accelerator in France, remember what happened to France in Armagedon starring Bruce Willis?

Some of it's in France, and some of it's in Switzerland. It's huge.

Some one help me out with this, I once heard a bit of a theory that suggested black holes may be everywhere. Anyone know what theory this is from?

It is called the theory of persistant black holes, unless you are thinking about black bodies, which are different but just as real, they act as mini black holes and capture photons, but not through gravitational fields, think about a black ping pong ball with a microscopic hole in it, if a photon enters, it will bounce around inside forever, now think about lots of photons going in, kinda like a crab trap, I hope this cleared things up.

    Aren't you describing dark energy?

Maybe, I've never heard that term before, black bodies store energy, helps to explain why surfaces get hot in the sun light.
