NASA Seeks To Combat Youth Apathy, But The Kids Don't Seem To Care

NASA seeks to reverse youth apathy to manned space exploration

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) – Young Americans have high levels of apathy about NASA's new vision of sending astronauts back to the moon by 2017 and eventually on to Mars, recent surveys show.

Concerned about this lack of interest, NASA's image-makers are taking a hard look at how to win over the young generation – media-saturated teens and 20-somethings growing up on YouTube and Google and largely indifferent to manned space flight.

``If you're going to do a space exploration program that lasts 40 years, if you just do the math, those are the guys that are going to carry the tax burden,'' said Mary Lynne Dittmar, president of a Houston company that surveyed young people about the space program.

The 2004 and 2006 surveys by Dittmar Associates Inc. revealed high levels of indifference among 18- to 25-year-olds toward manned trips to the moon and Mars.
The real problem is that going back to the Moon, is "like, you know, dude, we've been there before."

Now, if NASA can convince the public that Britany Spears is a lunar emigrant, they might have a chance of getting the kid's attention. Otherwise, no.

Kidding aside, what they need to do is restore the sense of romance and adventure to what NASA's turned into a dull, by-the-book, engineer's paradise of procedure, machines, and numbers.

Since NASA is run by engineers, I don't expect them to even understand the problem.

    ===

Example: When Kubrick was enlisting Arthur C. Clarke to help with "2001: A Space Odyssey", NASA was producing gems like "Marooned", which was a two-fisted gagger of a promotional film.

One film made it to cult icon status, the other just bombed.

I think "Armageddon" had the right idea. A mission to space to an aseteroid.... OFCOURSE that ship needs a machine gun on it.

Everyone should have free access to a machine gun any time they feel the urge.

    It's the American way.

I believe we lost some interest one we sold space out to the highest bidder. Now, anyone can go into space if your willing to pay the price. That took away some of the mystique and uniqueness that I think goes with space travel. I also don't believe they do a good enough job of promoting the benefits of the space program and what we have been able to capture from it.

That article is very interestng. And it's true from what I've seen. I have met far more apathetic young adults than there were who had motivation for a cause or anything, for that matter.

yeah, I'm in 9th grade and I could care less if nasa sent another man to the moon. I think that NASA should do something new, like try to setup a permenent camp on the moon.

You mean you "couldn't" care less. If you could care less if they sent another man to the moon, you are saying you really do care.

I believe that's the ultimate goal. First they'll have to scout around a bit and find some place worth staying in....hopefully a place with a lot of ice or water or good hydrates. The moon is so dry that if they found the Hoover Dam up there, they'd mine the concrete to get the water out.
