The 13th Doctor raises a serious question. .

I've noticed ever since the announcement that the new Doctor is female, that many comments...mainly on facebook...have been very negative. There seems to be a fairly even mix of protest from both male and female fans. Many say they will not watch anymore, they hope it's only a one season deal, they hope the ratings drop and the show is canceled...why?
This is about more than a silly Sci Fi show...The reactions demonstrate a very negative outlook on gender...why can't a role traditionally played by a male be taken over by a woman? Especially since the character is purely fictional and could in no way ever be realistic? What's the big deal here?
My view of the upcoming season is that I look forward to it, just like every other new season. I have no problem with it.

So, why can't a woman step into the role that has always been male, when the show is not about an actual person?

Looks like a good candidate for a thread merge.

I really don't want a Doctor Who discussion as much as I want the general topic of gender roles discussed. The TV show just demonstrated that there is a very stupid attitude from both male and female viewers on the subject.

because like most things dr who... they are tying to push the envelope. And for the very points you bring up.

"gender neutral" is very pc and in the news at the moment... this is more of the same thing. It is the same reason they had a black lesbian companion this season.

Why you ask do so many people care.... ill tell you. Because the whole idea of gender neutral is nothing but the newest pc construct. People care more about their beloved charterers then the idiot waling down the street.

Making Doctor Who female is as logical as having a male actor for Wonder woman... in either case i wouldn't care nonetheless.

no...it goes to show that most people have very clear ideas about gender outside of the PC bullshit.

Hardly the same thing...it's Wonder Woman...The Doctor regenerates...no rule ever stated that it had to be a male in the lead.

Check out Gene Roddenberry. He found a way to transition from the old Star Trek to the new. The chief medical officer was a woman, with the authority to remove the captain or anyone else from his post. Bam. The head of security was a woman. Pow.

Contrast with original Star Trek, thigh-highs and mini-skirts. Notably we had a woman cast as a receptionist, and pretty much all the rest of them were just there so Kirk could bitch slap them and then bang them.

Evolution. And nobody died. If Dr. Who and their basement-dwelling dweeb fans cannot transition then Star Trek dweebs (like myself) should talk shit to them, call them cavemen and knuckle-draggers, etc.
    Thanks from RNG and Friday13

The PC bullshit may just happen to be right, though.
