I don't understand why trying to repeal obamacare isn't political suicide. Some 70% said they did not want to see it repealed yet the repubs are still adamant about doing it. I don't give a shit what they promised in the past, if the country is dead set against it why do it?

Just incase you're serious with that tripe, it's the same hysterical, slippery slope horseshit fallacy that the bigots in the US had been bleating about for years. How many people have indicated that they want to marry an animal here ?

And aside from a few weird southern counties who eventually got over it, there was really very little backlash.

Also, at the time of the USSC decision, 53% of Americans approved of SSM. Now that number is up to 60%
You could use the 14th amendment to give rights to plural marriage. Equality of the law can be stretched to make any law applicable to others. Lets give kids the right to drive cars or drink alcohol .

You really don't have much of an understanding of constitutional law, do you sparky. You see , there are these concepts of "compelling government interest" and "rational basis"- yes they are legal terms- that allow a government that seeks to restrict rights to defend those restrictions. The states that were fighting same sex marriage failed miserably to convince the courts that there was a compelling government interest, or even a rational basis for prohibiting same sex marriage. I doubt that would be the case in defending prohibitions on allowing kids to drive drunk. That is just fucking stupid. They may or may not have that problem in defending bans on plural marriages although I suspect that they would. In any case, anyone who wants plural marriage can pursue it through the legislative or judicial system and attempt to make their case.

Iím astounded itís taken Australia this long to reach this stage. Itís been 20 years since this was trending in most developed countries.

We had a conservative Prime Minister (John Howard-Bush's 'Little Man of Steel') who saw this coming and he pushed through legislation that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. He had the majority in the Senate and it went through. The new bill had to destroy this former legislation and that was difficult as it is a conservative government in power that posited the current plebiscite and the 'Christian Right' (yes, we have them too) were in full opposition.

Now they have to legislate for it or die at the next election because the people forced their hand. It absolves the conservative government of responsibility as it is clearly 'the will of the people', so the hard right faction won't feel alienated and therefore, those members won't jump ship to the One Nation Party- a growing party of conservative bigots.

As usual, it is more than just feel good politics.

It was a backlash to the entire Democrat Party, hope they think it was worth it.

    That did happen in California.

I say let Australia do what it wants to do.
