    Homosexuality "reprehensible"

4 of 5 Russians apparently agree with this now:

An overwhelming majority of Russians believe it is 'reprehensible' for people of the same gender to have sex, a new poll says, charting growing intolerance towards same-sex relationships in the past 20 years.

The independent Levada Center survey released on Thursday serves as the latest sociological evidence of increasing homophobia in the country.

In Thursday’s poll, 83 percent of respondents said it was “always reprehensible” or "almost always reprehensible” for two adults of the same gender to have sexual relations.

Previous surveys showed that the number of Russians against gay sex has progressively increased, from 68 percent in 1998 to 76 percent in 2008.

This year, only 8 percent of respondents said there was nothing objectionable about sexual relations between adults of the same gender.

Levada also found that while people under 31 years of age were much more tolerant of same-sex relations than older generations in 2008, that distinction has now disappeared.

The pollster also tracked a slight growth in intolerance towards extramarital affairs — 68 percent — and abortions — 35 percent — over the two decades.

Levada carried out the survey among 1,600 people in 48 Russian regions on Dec. 15-20.

Especially interesting that the younger generations are becoming as homophobic as the older people.

I would say it is a combination of pervasive conservative propaganda at schools children there are deluged with since early age, these days, including from the Church

plus the modern rap/hip-hop culture among the Russian youths themselves, where homophobia is also pretty normal and mainstream, and when two rappers "battle" each other on stage, a very popular event there

it's routine for them to insult each other with homophobic slurs, like "pidor", a term that has same connotations in Russian as "fag" in English...

Thus, that kind of language is also normalized among young people there...

    Sad, really, all of it.

"fag" is a popular slur here in the States as well.

Things are moving in the right direction. But it's still going to be awhile before homosexuals achieve widespread social acceptance. A generation or two longer I would say.

Now as far as Russia goes - it probably has another millennium to go.

I was quite shocked when I was younger to hear my parents view on the whole homosexual topic. They were both like, yes they existed in our time and we knew who they were but nobody talked about it. They were just that uncle that never got married or that aunt that lived with her really good friend to save money. I don't think a lot of people really cared 50 years ago in so much as it didn't affect them personally. I remember a radio personality they both used to listen to who was very, shall we say was open for the time, and I remember my mother saying, what can he do, he just likes other men, so what?

If Oprah doesn't steal the limelight for women abused by men, then Corey Feldman's accounts of children abused by men might give homosexuality a black eye, so to speak.

Pedophiles come from both sexual orientations. And heterosexual ones are probably the majority, since overall there are many more straight people than LGBTs.

No grouping is exempt from criticism.

I don't understand why people are so concerned what two dudes do in the bedroom. I'm more concerned with their obsession with other people's sexuality.

I clearly remember the day I heard some kid at school say that their brother said that the band Culture Club were all gay. I went home and asked my sister what it meant. She didn’t know. So we asked my mom. My mom, an ardent Anglican, said “It’s when men love men or women love women”. We understood (on a basic level) and went and played.

I understand that lots of people do have a physical revulsion. It’s real. I can’t deny it. But I’ll never understand it.

I can empathize with a woman screwing a woman because, hey who wouldn’t? I can empathize with a guy screwing a guy because women seem to like it. Both of these are far easier for me to understand than, say, people who watch pro wrestling. Or superhero movies.

I recall my reaction, this is already a few years after moving to Canada, when I was talking online with a girl, Nastya, Anastasia, I went to school with back in Moscow, and she was telling me about her brother, Alexei, my own classmate (she is about a year, while he is same age as me) and somewhat a friend back then. I suspected nothing about him back then, he looked and acted same as any other guy I knew

And then, she tells me she first found strange, romantic-like text messages on his phone; and then followed him and caught him outside a place known as a secret hangout for gays in their neighbourhood. Gay clubs have no signs or anything over there, you know, do not advertise their presence in any way, except through word of mouth in their own community. Too dangerous, some of these places have been raided and attacked by vigilante groups and such, people have been hurt. Well, Alexei was outside such a place, and talking to another guy.

And Katya was all upset, saying, what the hell were they supposed to do with him now? Said her parents were looking for a clinic to send him too. It is seen by many in Russia as a disease, you know. And there are places there that claim to treat and cure it too... Pretty nasty places, usually...

And what was I thinking about?

Honestly, all those times when we were all in the changing room for gym class, when all us boys were naked in the showers there. I was trying to recall if he ever looked at me funny in there, or anyone else I knew... lol

Honestly, I am no longer uncomfortable around gay people, at this point. I saw, not too long ago, two guys making out at a mall around here. Didn't phase me at all

But, still, not sure, if I knew someone was gay, if I would be totally okay going into a locker room with them, at the gym or the pool... Stupid, I know. But, it's not a conscious, rational thing.

We aren't but when they get in your face and start waving that finger saying, "you better accept us", yeah, then we have a problem.
